Reproduction details

Claude Monet · The Seine in Argenteuil in 1872 · Musée d'Orsay

Argenteuil W230hand painted reproduction

A boat and several sailboats are moored on an almost motionless Seine. The low banks, distant hills and silvery sky come together in diffused light. Monet captures Argenteuil at a time when the river landscape also becomes a place of modern leisure.

Look at the work

A dark boat anchors an almost silvery landscape

The boat is placed slightly to the left of the center, surrounded by lighter boats whose masts rise into the sky. A white sail appears further away. To the left, foliage frames the foreground; the opposite bank remains low and leaves the horizon wide open.

The water takes up the creamy grays and blues of the sky, but the reflections of the masts draw supple and broken lines. The hills and distant constructions are reduced to a few pale values. The signature at the bottom left responds to the dark hull and stabilizes the whole.

The calm of the scene comes less from the absence of movement than from the very tight agreement between the sky, the water and the distant forms.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A suspended composition

Boats and boats occupy the center without touching the edges. The space left around them gives full scope to the Seine.

02

A depth by reduction

The large dark hull precedes the smaller sails, then the shore and hills. Each stage loses contrast as it moves away.

03

Shared light tones

The sky and water use the same creams, grays and blues. The reflections and the edge line are enough to separate the two surfaces.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The reference corresponds to the canvas RF 1961 4, W230, also designated La Barque, Argenteuil. It allows you to recognize the central group of boats and the large area of clear water.

Composition01

A very low horizon

The opposite bank occupies little height, leaving most of the composition to the sky and its reflection.

Color02

A central dark accent

The boat concentrates deep values and serves as a starting point for reading sails and masts.

Matter03

A light without harsh shadow

The contrasts remain soft even in the foreground, as if an atmospheric veil united the entire scene.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Musée d'Orsay identifies this view from 1872 by the RF 1961 4 inventory and number 230 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Associated title01

La Barque, Argenteuil

This title emphasizes the dark boat in the center, which distinguishes this version from the many other views of the Seine painted by Monet in the town.

Context02

After the stay in London

Monet moved to Argenteuil at the end of 1871. His attention to contours absorbed by light notably extends his discoveries of Constable and Turner in London.

Collection03

Legacy Frédéric Lung, 1961

Mr. and Mrs. Frédéric Lung bequeath to the national collections this oil on canvas measuring 50 × 65.3 cm, now kept at the Musée d'Orsay.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Keep the central boat dark without artificially detaching it from the water.
  • Respect the finesse of the masts and the small white sail located in the distance.
  • Maintain the very low contrast of the shore and remote hills.
  • Differentiate between sky and Seine by the gesture of the key rather than by two separate palettes.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its cream gray, pale blues and dark green accent create a very calming atmosphere. This reproduction is suitable for a bedroom, living room or entrance; a light wood, ivory or matte silver frame respects its softness.
