À propos de l’œuvre
Prairie fleurie avec arbres et pissenlits, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · End of April 1890 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France
Tree trunks in grassReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two pine trunks cut by the framing stand at the edge of a meadow covered with white flowers and yellow dandelions. Van Gogh chooses a close-up viewpoint that transforms the bark and grass into fields of lines.
Look at the work
Rough bark in the middle of a flowery meadow
The large trunk on the left fills almost a third of the canvas. Its bark is constructed by gray, lilac, white and black ribbons that fit together. A second, thinner trunk leans from the right towards the center.
The grass is covered with small vertical green and yellow touches, punctuated with white circles and golden flowers. A dark diagonal crosses the meadow and leads to other trunks, barely visible at the top.
The subject is not the tops of the trees but their anchoring: the bark, flowers and soil become a complete landscape.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The work KM 100.189 can be recognized by the monumental trunk cut on the left, the second oblique pine and the tight carpet of white and yellow flowers.
An unusual close-up
Van Gogh eliminates the peak and the horizon. The viewer is at the level of the undergrowth, facing the bases of the pines and the low vegetation.
Almost abstract bark
Thick lines, angles and colored ribbons make up the large trunk. At a short distance, the material takes precedence over botanical representation.
A diagonal depth
The dark line running through the grass and the sloping trunk organize the space. Despite the tight framing, the meadow maintains a great depth.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Kroeller-Müller Museum preserves Tree Trunks in the Grass under number KM 100.189. This oil on canvas measuring 72.5 × 91.5 cm is cataloged F676 and JH1970.
The Asylum Garden
The museum places the motif in the vegetation of the garden of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, where Van Gogh stayed in Saint-Rémy.
White flowers and dandelions
Van Gogh describes to Theo a pink and purple trunk, grass, white flowers, dandelions and other trees at the bottom.
Unravel nature
In a letter to Émile Bernard, he explains that he sometimes modifies the motif but finds the painting already present in the real world, to be released.
