Ears of wheatReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Van Gogh approaches so close to the field that the horizon disappears. The long blue-green leaves, the still tender ears of corn and a few wild flowers fill the entire height of the canvas.

Look at the work

In the middle of the wheat, without sky or horizon

The stems rise from the lower edge and cross like a network. Some remain straight, others bend under the ears; their banded leaves describe large curves that prevent the surface from becoming regular.

The range is deliberately tightened around greens, blues and pale yellows. A cornflower in the upper part and a pink bindweed at the bottom right discreetly interrupt this vegetal sea.

By removing the distant landscape, Van Gogh transforms a fragment of field into an immersive experience: the gaze is at the same height as the stems agitated by the wind.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum preserves this painting under inventory s0088V1962. Painted in Auvers in June 1890, it bears the references F767/JH2034.

01

A radically close framing

No path, building or horizon allows the scene to be located. This tightening requires observing the differences in curvature, weight and maturity between the ears.

02

The wind returned by the directions

The long S-leaves, sloping stems and vertical touches produce continuous movement. Van Gogh wanted the colors to almost make the soft rustling of wheat heard.

03

Two flowers as landmarks

Blueberry and pink bindweed are small accents but they structure the depth. They also give the scale of the tall stems that surround them.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Ears of Wheat is an oil on canvas measuring 64 × 48 cm, painted in Auvers-sur-Oise in June 1890. The work is recorded s0088V1962, F767 and JH2034.

Pattern

The painter placed in the field

The museum points out that Van Gogh had to work among the wheat. His point of view is not that of a walker in front of a panorama, but that of an observer enveloped by plants.

Letter

A painting described to Paul Gauguin

Van Gogh details the blue-green stems, ribbon leaves, yellowing spikes and pink reflections in Gauguin. He associates this colorful accord with the rustling of grain downwind.

Remaining with Theo then with the Van Gogh family, the painting was transferred to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1962 and is today kept in Amsterdam.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the framing without horizon, the different movements of the leaves, the values very close to green and the two small flowers which punctuate the composition.

  • Heavy ears that bend in several directions
  • The long green-blue leaves in the shape of ribbons
  • The cornflower placed in the upper part
  • The pink bindweed visible at the bottom right
