Claude Monet · A Normandy train in 1877 · Art Institute of Chicago

Arrival of the Normandy train, Saint-Lazare W440 stationhand painted reproduction

A black locomotive enters on the right while another dark mass waits in the left lane. Between them, the rails converge under a glass roof almost erased by steam. Monet does not describe an isolated machine: he paints the moment when train, crowd, architecture and smoke become a single blue atmosphere.

Look at the work

The locomotive emerges under a vault dissolved by steam

The train on the right advances towards the spectator, with its high chimney, its red chassis and its small light lamps. An employee seen from behind stands between the rails. On the left, a second machine closes the platform in front of a crowd punctuated with reds and blues.

The large glass roof can be seen by its central gable and a few metal arches. The white and gray-blue plumes fill almost the entire upper half, opening up views of the buildings beyond the station in places.

Smoke hides the architecture but reveals the movement: each volute indicates the arrival, braking and activity of the locomotives.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Two black masses separated by the tracks

The side locomotives frame a central passage which leads towards the light and distant silhouettes.

02

A glass roof transformed into an interior sky

Iron and glass enclose clouds of steam, overturning the usual conventions of the landscape.

03

Blues placed on a hot preparation

The gray-blue of the smoke dialogues with the ochres of the ground and the reds of the machines, giving the scene its vibration.

Read this specific version

The unique reference corresponds to object 16571 of the Art Institute of Chicago. The public domain file of 5890 × 4418 px was reduced to 3000 × 2250 px, without enlargement, then encoded in WebP.

Composition01

The red chassis of the right train

This warm accent must remain visible under the black mass and distinguish the locomotive from its shadow.

Color02

Superimposed scrolls

Blue, white, gray and a few roses make up several planes of vapor rather than a single opaque cloud.

Matter03

A crowd reduced to touches

The travelers are small colored verticals on the platforms; their rhythm makes the activity without distracting from the train.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This oil on canvas measuring 60.3 × 80.2 cm, painted in 1877, is kept in Chicago under the inventory 1933.1158 and classified Wildenstein 440.

Series01

One of twelve views of St. Lazarus

Monet worked in the station and its surroundings in early 1877; eight paintings were completed in time for the third impressionist exhibition.

Technique02

An execution in several passages

The Chicago scientific study highlights wet-on-wet applications, readiness reserves and several shape adjustments.

Provenance03

From Hoschedé to the Ryerson collection

Purchased by Ernest Hoschedé in March 1877, the painting went through Georges de Bellio, Durand-Ruel then Martin A. Ryerson, whose legacy brought it to the museum in 1933.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the position of the two locomotives and the convergence of the rails.
  • Keep the red chassis and the employee in the foreground.
  • Differentiate between blue, gray and white layers of steam.
  • Allow the canopy to appear in fragments.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This bright industrial scene matches an office, contemporary living room or loft. A black, petrol blue or patinated steel frame highlights the machines while allowing steam to breathe.
