Look at the work

The arc of the hall brings together rails, smoke and city

The frame describes a large dark curve which envelops the upper part. On the left, a green locomotive stands out against blue plumes; in the center, the rails and several machines lead to the illuminated buildings beyond the glass roof.

Travelers are reduced to small vertical touches on the quays. The ocher ground, crossed by the steel of the tracks, responds to the blues of the sky and the steam. A few red accents are enough to liven up the space without breaking its atmospheric unity.

The geometry of the station remains visible, but above all it serves as a framework for a study of light, steam and movement.

The curve of the hall closes the composition and contrasts with the central light. Its beams remain readable without becoming a technical drawing.

The fumes do not form a single cloud. They rise from locomotives, pass in front of the glass roof and change color depending on the background.

Rails to deepen the space

Their lines start largely from the foreground and approach the city. The perspective gives a solid foundation to the fragmented touch.

The green locomotive remains off-center

Placed on the left, it balances the blue mass of the steam and leaves the central axis of the rails free.

Color02

Blue isn't just for the sky

Cobalt, blue gray and purple circulate in the smoke, machines, windows and shadows of the ground.

Figures are punctuations

A few reds, blacks and whites suggest the crowd. Their small scale reinforces the grandeur of the hall.

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This oil on canvas measuring 75 × 105 cm, painted in 1877, is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the inventory RF 2775, with the old number INV 363, and classified Wildenstein 438.

Series01

One of twelve views of St. Lazarus

Monet obtained authorization to work in the station and its surroundings at the beginning of 1877. He multiplied the points of view in order to capture variations in steam and light.

Exposure02

Presented to the public in 1877

This version appears in the third impressionist exhibition under number 97. Its large format and its very constructed composition make it one of the major pieces of the ensemble.

Quailbotte03

Purchased directly from Monet

Gustave Caillebotte acquired the painting from Monet on March 10, 1878 for 685 francs. The work entered the national collections with the Caillebotte legacy accepted in 1896.
