Étretat, The Needle and the Downstream Gate W1043hand painted reproduction

In a vertical panel with scrolled contours, the Aiguille d'Étretat stands to the left of the Porte d'Aval, whose arch and cliff dissolve in a pink-blue mist. The sea occupies almost two-thirds of the height and becomes a pearly surface covered with small touches of green, blue and mauve. This oil on panel measuring 85.4 × 44.2 cm, dated 1885 -1886, is kept at the Art Gallery of Ontario under number 91/377 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1043.

The Downstream Gate transformed into vertical and foggy vision

The Needle and the Arch occupy only the upper register. Everything else on the panel is delivered to the water, seen almost without a bank or boat. The narrow format accentuates the height of the cliffs and the distance that separates the viewer from the motif.

The rocks are barely more sustained than the sky. Pale blue, lilac, pink gray and cream overlap without hard contours; in the sea, green and purple touches give a light vibration to the large light surface.

Monet does not seek here the spectacular effect of the site: he lets the mist reduce the cliffs to colorful presences, almost suspended above the water.

Unusual support and format

The work is painted on panel, not canvas, and is part of a vertical decorative form. The framing must therefore be understood as a complete composition, not as a cut marine.

The sea as a large colorful field

By placing the cliffs very high, Monet gives the water an exceptional surface. Touch variations prevent this clear area from becoming empty or uniform.

Contours absorbed by the atmosphere

The Needle remains identifiable, but the Downstream Gate mixes with the sky and the mist. Loyalty depends on very small differences in value rather than a strong drawing.

A single exact image of W1043 is used throughout the sheet and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 680 × 1282 px and retains the native definition available without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the panel vertical and its contoured outline

The shape belongs to object W1043 and organizes the entire composition. Converting it into a rectangle or cropping the edges would lose its decorative nature.

Color02

Preserve the upper place of the Needle and the ark

Cliffs must remain concentrated in the upper third so that the body of water maintains its unusual magnitude.

Matter03

Keep transitions very pale

Blues, pinks, mauves and greens are distinguished by shades. Excessively enhancing the contrast would destroy the mist effect specific to this version.

Object01

An oil on panel rather than a standard canvas

The AGO instructions specify the overall support and dimensions. The decorative shape, visible with its frame, explains the exceptional vertical framing among the views of Étretat.

The Needle and the Downstream Gate from the open sea

The natural arch and the insulated needle are among the motifs most used by Monet in Étretat. This version keeps them away in the mist and reserves most of the sign for the sea.

An anonymous legacy entered in 1991

The work is owned by the Art Gallery of Ontario through an anonymous bequest. It is numbered 91/377 and is documented to have been created and representing Étretat, Normandy.
