The curve of the beach leads to the Porte d'Amont

The pebbles occupy the foreground by a wide oblique band. A few boats pulled onto the beach and small figures line the shore. Their succession accompanies the gaze towards the arch, placed at the very end of the bay under the cliff.

The gray-blue sky is reflected in a calm sea, punctuated with greens and pinks. The nearest cliff receives ochres and mauves, while the distant reliefs blend into lighter blues. This gradual cooling gives distance.

W828 does not present the Porte d'Amont as an isolated monument: Monet makes it appear at the end of a course of pebbles, boats, figures and cliffs.

A beach drawn like a diagonal

The boundary between the pebbles and the sea rises to the right. This line leads the eye to the bottom of the bay and gives a clear direction to a landscape that is nevertheless very open.

Tiny but structuring figures

Walkers and fishermen do not form a detailed genre scene. Their dark accents measure the height of the cliffs and punctuate the depth of the shore.

A perspective constructed by color

The nearby cliff combines ocher, purple and green; the following gradually lose their warmth and contrast. Atmospheric blue replaces precise contours in the distance.

Preserve the small ladder of the Door

The arch occupies only a limited portion on the right side. Enlarging it would transform this bay view into a spectacular portrait of the cliff and distort the view.

Differentiate between pebbles and sea using the fingerboard

Brush strokes from the shore are short and irregular; those of the water stretch horizontally. This opposition makes the materials readable without careful drawing.

Matter03

Maintain the mist of distant planes

Successive cliffs should not present the same contrast. Their blue-gray erasure is essential to maintain depth and overcast weather.

Campaign01

The Norman coast painted in 1883

Monet stayed in Étretat during the winter of 1883 and worked facing the cliffs under changing lights. Tides and weather directly determine accessible viewpoints.

Provenance02

A painting acquired very early by Durand-Ruel

The dealer Paul Durand-Ruel bought the work from Monet on December 8, 1883. It then joined the collection of Antonin Personnaz, a great defender of impressionist painting.

Museum03

The Antonin Personnaz legacy of 1937

The work entered the national collections by bequest in 1937. Assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986, it bears the number RF 1937 42.
