Three stranded boats are spaced out on the beach while the cliff of Aval, seen against the light, closes the entire left side. Above the sea, fine orange-red streaks pierce a yellow, pink, blue and purple sky. Painted in 1885, this oil on canvas measuring 81.1 × 100.1 cm is kept in the Pola Museum of Art under number P08-0083 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1016.

The last reds of the day cross a sky where the cliff becomes almost black

The rock mass is built by large brown, green and purple sections which reveal its strata. Its oblique edge descends towards the sea and opens the horizon, where the sunset clouds form a discontinuous line of small warm accents.

The three boats occupy different distances: one near the cliff, one in the center, a wider one on the right. Their dark hulls and thin masts structure the beach without interrupting the light reflected in the water and on the pebbles.

The sunset is not reduced to a luminous disk: it can be read in the progressive transformation of the sky, the sea, the cliff and even the boats.

The rock is never uniformly black and the sky is not continuously orange. Monet contrasts cold browns with veiled yellows, then reserves the brightest reds on the horizon.
