A diagonal that leads to the cliff
The water's edge starts from the bottom of the canvas and goes up towards the Downstream Gate. This curve avoids a rigid separation between sea and land and naturally guides the eye.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · Étretat · 1883 · W830
Étretat beach curves towards the cliff of Aval and its needle, bathed in yellow and blue morning light. Painted in 1883, this 65 × 81 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Asahi Group Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art and corresponds to Wildenstein 830.

Look at the work
The sea occupies the entire left side, while the beach rises diagonally to the right. The cliff forms a tall, warm mass in the center; the needle appears in the distance, cut out of the sea mist.
Yellow, cream and pink shape the chalk exposed to the sun. The water mixes blue, green and gray, crossed by a long ribbon of foam which connects the foreground to the foot of the cliff. A few colorful boats punctuate the beach.
In W830, the brilliance does not come from a spectacular sky: it arises from the contrast between the cliff heated by the morning and the still cold sea.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The water's edge starts from the bottom of the canvas and goes up towards the Downstream Gate. This curve avoids a rigid separation between sea and land and naturally guides the eye.
Monet superimposes ocher, pink, yellow and white without smoothing the rock. The chalk appears to vibrate because its shadows remain purple and blue.
The small hulls on the right introduce green, red and brown. They give the measure of the immense wall while recalling the fishing activity on the beach.
Reference image
The sheet uses exactly one reference image. The W830 work is converted into a true WebP of 749 × 600 px, preserved at its original public resolution without artificial enlargement.
The arch and needle must remain legible but distant. Contours that are too black or too precise would artificially detach them from the mist.
The warm cliff responds to the turquoise sea and pale blue sky. Reproduction must maintain this opposition without saturating the shadows.
The white keys follow a curved trajectory and mingle with the blue. A continuous, regular border would make the beach still.
Documented benchmarks
The Asahi Group Oyamazaki Villa Museum of Art preserves Morning in Étretat, oil on canvas from 1883, 65 × 81 cm and Wildenstein 830.
Monet stayed on the Normandy coast and took over the cliffs under different times and conditions. The fixed pattern allows it to directly compare atmospheric effects.
The two emblematic shapes are located southwest of the beach. Here, their silhouette closes the bay and gives depth to the landscape.
The 65 × 81 cm format, the morning light and the Wildenstein number 830 distinguish this view from the other compositions by Étretat produced the same year.
