À propos de l’œuvre

Maisons à Falaise, brouillard, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Cliff · 1885 · W977

Houses in Cliff, fog W977hand painted reproduction

In almost total mist, a few pink roofs and a tall chimney appear in the center right before dissolving into pale blues, mauves and pearly grays. The terrain in the foreground is nothing more than a network of cold touches where faint green and red accents remain. Painted in Falaise in 1885, this oil on canvas measuring 73.5 × 92.5 cm is kept at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud under the number Dep. 0673 FC and corresponds to Wildenstein 977.

Look at the work

The fog almost erases the houses and transforms the landscape into light

The horizon forms no clear lines. The architectures come together in a narrow area slightly to the right of the center: a pink roof, a fireplace and a few darker verticals are enough to suggest the village without isolating it from the atmosphere.

The sky and ground share the same lavender blues and cold roses. Their separation is mainly based on the direction of the brushstrokes: calmer in the upper part, they become oblique, short and more varied in the foreground.

Here the pattern is not only seen through the fog: it is produced by it. Houses exist because some slightly warmer colors emerge from an almost monochrome envelope.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An architecture reduced to a few signs

The chimney and roofs give just enough information to recognize houses. Their lack of contours expresses the distance and thickness of the air, not accidental imprecision.

02

A range of extremely close values

Pearl blue, gray pink, mauve and cream overlap without brutal contrast. The small temperature differences are enough to make the volumes appear and then disappear.

03

A foreground more tactile than the sky

The touches of the field are visible, crossed and sometimes more colorful. They give a point of support to the gaze before the composition fades upwards.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The only reference photograph from the museum was cropped on the canvas, then reduced to 2,994 × 2,336 px and encoded as a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Maintain the discretion of the houses

Strengthening their contours or colors would contradict the fog effect and transform W977 into an ordinary urban view.

Color02

Preserve mauve and pink shades in grays

A reproduction only blue or white would lose the warm vibration which causes the roofs to emerge and enlivens the atmosphere.

Matter03

Keep the signature visible without darkening the bottom

The signature is at the bottom right, but the ground must remain clear and diffuse in order to maintain the continuity of the mist.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Corboud Foundation preserves Houses in Falaise, fog, oil on canvas from 1885, 73.5 × 92.5 cm, Depot Dep. 0673 FC and Wildenstein 977.

Location01

Cliff, in Normandy

Monet stayed in this region in 1885 and observed how the terrain, roofs and chimneys changed when the mist greatly reduced visibility.

Effect02

Dense fog as the main subject

The canvas pushes the study of the atmosphere very far: the weak opposition between sky, terrain and architecture makes uncertain perception the true motif.

Collection03

Corboud Foundation, on deposit since 1999

The work belongs to the ensemble formed by Gérard Corboud and presented at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum; it bears the number Dep. 0673 FC.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 977 version
  • The pink roofs almost erased
  • The fireplace isolated in the mist
  • Blues and mauves with very similar values

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This very light horizontal landscape is suitable for a bedroom, living room or meditative space. An off-white, powder pink or mist blue wall and a light frame accompany its subtlety without hardening the image.
