Factories in Clichy seen from Asnières, F317Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Beyond a field streaked with yellow and green, the chimneys of Clichy cast their smoke into a turquoise sky; two tiny walkers connect this vast industrial panorama to a human presence.
Look at the work
Three strips of landscape between field and smoke
The field occupies almost the lower half of the canvas and descends slightly towards the viewer. A dark barrier marks its boundary before the long strip of workshops, red roofs and chimneys.
The blue-green sky receives gray, white and purple smoke which merges with the clouds. The oblique lines in the foreground give the terrain an energy opposite to the horizontality of the buildings.
Van Gogh painted Clichy from the shore of Asnières, northwest of Paris. The official title of the museum thus distinguishes the place represented from the point of view chosen by the artist.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The Saint Louis Art Museum preserves this 53.7 × 72.7 cm canvas under number 579:1958; its references are F317/JH1287.
Field, factory, sky
The composition is divided into three almost equal bands. This simple structure allows you to directly compare vegetation, architecture and smoky atmosphere.
Two barely visible figures
In the middle of the field, two small figures advance side by side. The museum suggests that they could be lovers, without offering an identity.
The smoke becomes color
Industrial plumes do not form a black mass. Van Gogh mixes them in the sky with silvery grays, whites and mauves.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work

Clichy seen from Asnières
The artist looks at the Clichy factories from across the Seine, which explains the two names long associated with the painting.
An industrial suburb
The chimneys, workshops and smoke show a Parisian landscape transformed by industry rather than an intact countryside.
Exhibited in Saint Louis
The painting is numbered 579:1958 and is on display in Gallery 218 of the Saint Louis Art Museum.
