A mass of grassy cliff closes the entire right side while the English Channel extends to the left under a blue sky crossed by rapid clouds. Beyond the first wall, a second clear cape appears as a vertical blade above the water. Signed and dated Claude Monet 81, this oil on canvas measuring 65 × 81.1 cm is kept at Aberdeen Art Gallery under the number ABDAG003046 and corresponds to Wildenstein 656.

An asymmetrical cliff above a spring sea

The first grassy plane climbs from the lower edge to the large cliff on the right. The sea occupies the left half and leads to a distant cape, framed by the void. The sky completes this construction diagonally with scattered clouds.

The bright blue of the water and sky is opposed to the greens, pinks, beiges and yellows of the cliff. On its lit side, an orange-yellow stripe marks the erosion of the chalk and draws the eye towards the distant cape.

The cliff blocks the space instead of framing it: Monet transforms this imbalance into a feeling of dizziness and wind above the English Channel.

An asymmetry inspired by Japanese prints

The main wall occupies a large part of the right and almost entirely hides Cape Fagnet. The sea remains open to the left, without compensatory symmetry.

A point of view without human presence

No boat, building or path interrupts the coast. This absence reinforces the monumental scale of the cliffs observed during the stay of March-April 1881.

Light constructed by vivid contrasts

Blues, greens and yellows are posed with energy. The strip of illuminated chalk separates the dark cliff from the sea and makes the depth immediately readable.

Campaign01

Work carried out in Fécamp in the spring of 1881

Monet studied the cliffs between March 9 and April 10, observing changes in light, wind and sea on the same chalk shapes.

Acquisition02

An entry into the Aberdeen collection in 1927

The museum purchased the work through Wallis & Son, with half the price funded by Sir James Murray.

Composition03

Cape Fagnet almost entirely hidden

Moving slightly to the right, Monet lets the cliff in the foreground hide the cape and the Notre-Dame-du-Salut church, accentuating the dizziness of the view.
