Wheat field under storm cloudsReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Under a blue-black sky laden with clouds, a vast field of green wheat stretches to the horizon. Van Gogh uses the double square format to make you feel the expanse of the plain and the pressure of the storm.

Look at the work

A green plain under an immense sky

The horizon line almost divides the canvas in two. At the bottom, the green wheat is described by a multitude of short touches which follow the undulations of the ground. Some red flowers appear in the nearest band.

The sky changes from cobalt blue to almost black blue. White and gray clouds accumulate to the left and near the horizon, while long horizontal touches give the atmosphere direction and weight.

The painting does not recount any event: the opposition between the luminous earth and the dark sky is enough to produce a feeling of space, solitude and charged air.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum preserves this work under inventory s0106V1962. It is cataloged F778/JH2097 and belongs to the group of panoramic landscapes of July 1890.

01

The double square format

The canvas is approximately twice as wide as it is tall. Van Gogh adopted this format at Auvers to give the plain an almost continuous breadth and reduce any impression of a conventional setting.

02

Two almost equal masses

The field and sky each occupy almost half of the surface. Their geometric balance makes the contrast between the green-yellows of the ground and the deep blues of the storm more intense.

03

An emotion without anecdote

There is no road, no house, no important figure. The density of the brushstrokes and the variation of the bruises alone carry the emotion of the landscape.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Wheat field under storm clouds is an oil on canvas measuring 50.4 × 101.3 cm, painted in Auvers in July 1890. It bears the inventory s0106V1962 and the references F778/JH2097.

Letter

Sadness and extreme loneliness

Around July 10, Van Gogh wrote to Theo and Jo that he had painted vast fields of wheat under troubled skies to express sadness and extreme loneliness.

Balance

An equally beneficial campaign

In the same letter, he specifies that these landscapes also say what he finds healthy and strengthening in the countryside. The work is therefore not reduced to a funeral reading.

Series

The great panoramas of Auvers

This painting belongs to the double square compositions of the last stay, such as Field of wheat with crows. Their elongated format allows an enveloping vision of the plain.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must maintain the clear separation between earth and sky, the richness of the greens, the heavy clouds and the small red touches of the foreground.

  • Darkened cobalt sky towards horizon
  • White and gray clouds on the left
  • The green field animated by thousands of touches
  • The double square panoramic format
