À propos de l’œuvre

La Fête du 14 juillet à Paris, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · July 1886 · Paris

The July 14 Festival in Paris, F222Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A Parisian street disappears under a profusion of tricolor flags. The red, white and blue standards intersect above a group of passers-by, while the facades and trees become almost secondary.

Look at the work

Flags invade the sky and transform the street into colorful movement

Van Gogh places the vanishing line in the center, but the diagonals of the poles constantly jostle it. The nearest flags are wide and strongly colored; those at the bottom are reduced to short touches.

The crowd concentrates in the lower half. A man in a high hat stands out on the left, a row of silhouettes advances in the axis and a light woman remains near the right edge, in front of a green facade.

The July 14 Festival in Paris F222/JH1108 is an oil on canvas of 44 × 39 cm painted in July 1886. The work belongs to the collection of Villa Flora in Winterthur.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The painting does not describe a specific parade: it above all reflects the sensation of a street decorated with flags. Red, blue and white are laid in quick strokes which connect the facades, the crowd and the upper space.

01

The poles form a network of diagonals

They start on both sides of the street and converge towards the center. Their crossing multiplies the directions and gives the sky an almost material density.

02

The national colors become a structure

Red first catches the eye, blue creates colder counterpoints, and cream touches often replace pure white. The palette organizes depth.

03

The figures remain deliberately summary

Hats, coats and dresses are indicated by a few vertical lines. This economy keeps attention on the waving of flags above them.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F222/JH1108, the 44 × 39 cm format and the Villa Flora collection precisely identify this Parisian street decorated with 1886.

Date

The painting responds directly to the national holiday

Painted during Van Gogh's first Parisian year, it captures the flag-decorated streets for July 14 rather than a recognizable monument.

Pattern

The decorated street is a subject of modern painting

Monet and Manet had already used flags to translate urban life. Van Gogh takes up the motif with a more compact and nervous touch.

Winterthur

The work is associated with Villa Flora

The Hahnloser collection assembled in Winterthur played an important role in the Swiss reception of Van Gogh and other modern painters.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the tangle of the poles, the frank reds and blues, the dark crowd, the man in the high hat, the green facade and the tight perspective.

  • The big red flag in the upper left
  • The blue bands that cut the reds
  • The man in the hat high left
  • The row of red heads in the center
  • The green facade and the light silhouette on the right
