Wheat field in Auvers with houseReproduction of oil painting on canvas

A field of green and yellow wheat rises almost to the white houses on the horizon. The ears of corn, painted in long commas, make vegetation the real subject of this view of Auvers.

Look at the work

The White House behind a sea of ears

The foreground is entirely occupied by wheat stalks. Their white, yellow and dark green touches curve in several directions. A narrow succession of green bands then leads towards the buildings.

On the horizon, a white house and some low buildings are framed by dark trees. The sky is reduced to a thin blue band animated by clouds; this choice makes the field larger and closer.

The house gives a reference to the landscape, but it remains almost absorbed by the energy of the wheat: the architecture becomes a punctuation at the edge of the vegetation.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Phillips Collection preserves this work under the title House at Auvers and number 0797. It corresponds to F804/JH2018, also known as Wheat Field at Auvers with White House.

01

A horizon placed very high

Nearly four-fifths of the canvas belongs to the field. The thin strip of sky and the distant houses give the viewer the impression of being immersed among the stems.

02

Epis written with a brush

Van Gogh does not individualize each plant. It repeats white and yellow curves on a green background, creating a rhythm that makes the wind feel through the wheat.

03

White as a resting point

The light house interrupts the greens and yellows. Its simple geometry offers a small stable point against the continuous movement of the foreground.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

This oil on canvas measures 48.6 × 62.9 cm and belongs to The Phillips Collection under number 0797. Painted in Auvers in June 1890, it is cataloged F804/JH2018.

Titles

House at Auvers or wheat field

The museum uses the title House at Auvers. The catalogs raisonnés specify the motif under the title Wheat Field at Auvers with White House; both designate the same canvas.

Acquisition

At the Phillips Collection since 1952

Duncan Phillips acquired the work in 1952 for his Washington collection, where it now has object number 0797.

Pattern

The countryside on the edge of the village

In Auvers, Van Gogh frequently paints the transition between crops and homes. Here, wheat dominates to the point of reducing the house to a distant strip.

What the painter must preserve

Reproduction must keep the numerous directions of the ears, the succession of green bands, the clear white of the houses and the deliberately very narrow sky.

  • The large white commas of the ears in the foreground
  • Green bands that lead towards the horizon
  • White House framed by dark trees
  • The thin strip of cloudy blue sky
