Champ de blé avec cyprès, par Vincent van Gogh

Wheat field with cypress, F743Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two dark cypresses rise in front of the Alpilles, at the edge of a yellow field as agitated as a sea. This small workshop version condenses one of Van Gogh's most constructed landscapes by circulating the same movement through wheat, trees, mountains and clouds.
Look at the work
The cypress connects the wheat to the clouds
The field occupies the entire width of the foreground. Its yellow, green and ocher touches converge towards a row of shrubs, then towards the two cypresses which form a slightly off-center dark point.
On the right, a rounded olive tree responds to the verticality of the cypresses. The blue-mauve ridges of the Alpilles and the white clouds follow successive curves, so that no area of the landscape remains still.
Depth does not rest on a wise perspective: Van Gogh obtains it by alternating dark masses, light bands and rhythms of touch which lead the gaze to the sky.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This version from September 1889 measures 51.5 × 65 cm. Preserved in the Stavros Niarchos collection, it bears the references F743/JH1790.
A dark vertical as a hinge
Cypresses almost completely cut the strip of the sky. Their black and green silhouette stabilizes the center of the composition while connecting distant planes.
A field built in waves
The ears are not described one by one. Series of curved and oblique lines cause the wheat to rise towards the trees, then resume in the contours of the mountains.
A repetition, not a mechanical copy
Van Gogh takes up the composition of his great study on the motif, but tightens the proportions and rebalances the shapes. The small canvas thus has its own rhythm.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Wheat field with cypress F743/JH1790 belongs to the repetitions painted in Saint-Rémy in September 1889. The canvas measures 51.5 × 65 cm.
Three paintings around the same landscape
Van Gogh first produced a large version in front of the motif, then twice in the workshop. F743 is the smallest of these interpretations of the cypress-lined field.
A variation designed for his family
Saint-Rémy's small rehearsals allowed the painter to preserve and share his most accomplished compositions; this version was intended for his mother and sister.
F743 and JH1790
These two references distinguish the canvas from the large versions F717, today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and F615, kept at the National Gallery in London.
