À propos de l’œuvre

Champ de blé vert, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · June -July 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France

Green wheat field, F718Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A still green field descends towards a clear road before going up to the Alpilles. Van Gogh constructs this landscape without much central motif: the waves of grass, the poppies and the purple contours of the mountain make the gaze circulate across the entire width.

Look at the work

A moving field at the foot of the Alpilles

In the foreground, the green wheat is laid in long diagonal touches, separated by blue-black shadows and punctuated with red flowers. A white-gray road cuts the composition in the middle, then a few hedges and reduced houses lead towards the mountain.

The rocky massif unfolds in purple, blue and gray teeth under a milky sky. The curves of the relief respond to the furrows of the field, so much so that land, road and mountain seem to belong to the same movement.

The depth is born from three very readable planes - field, road, mountain - but Van Gogh unites them with a continuous touch and the same blue-purple.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Green wheat field bears the references F718/JH1727. Painted in Saint-Rémy in 1889, the canvas measures 73 × 92 cm and belongs to a private collection.

01

The clear road opens up depth

Placed almost halfway up, the gray-white band separates the field from the distant ones. Its slight diagonal, however, prevents the composition from dividing into two immobile bands.

02

Poppies measure the foreground

The sharpest red punctuations are concentrated at the bottom of the canvas. They become rarer and smaller towards the road, giving scale to the vast green carpet.

03

The mountain is shaped by color

The Alpilles are not modeled by classic chiaroscuro. Purple blue contours, gray planes and a few cream highlights are enough to make their relief rugged.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F718/JH1727 belongs to the group of painted fields around the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole during Van Gogh's first summer in Saint-Rémy.

Series

The same site observed from several angles

Van Gogh took over the fields, the road and the Alpilles in several paintings from June 1889. Each version modifies the point of view, the maturity of the wheat and the place of the cypresses.

Catalog

References F718 and JH1727

F718 refers to the catalog of Jacob-Baart de la Faille and JH1727 to that of Jan Hulsker. These numbers distinguish this painting from the other Green Wheat Fields of 1889.

Conservation

A private collectible work

The painting is documented in private collections and was presented on loan at the Kunsthaus Zürich. It should not be confused with the Green Wheat Field with Cypress F719 in Prague.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the nuanced greens of the field, the red poppies, the almost white road, the purple contours of the Alpilles and the cold, slightly pink sky.

  • The long green and blue-black touches in the foreground
  • The small red flowers distributed throughout the wheat
  • The clear road that crosses the landscape
  • The purple and cream lines of the Alpilles massif
