The plain washed by the rain
The foreground is a mosaic of greens, mauves and browns where the touches follow the grass and furrows. Further on, the fields fit together in light bands to a very low line of trees. The pale blue sky, occupied by large white clouds, gives air to the whole.
Van Gogh painted this view during his last weeks in Auvers. The title associates the freshness of the palette with the moment following the downpour. Despite the tragic reputation attached to this period, the artist also described the countryside as healthy and strengthening; the canvas has this calm breadth.
The landscape is born from an accumulation of colorful signs which, seen together, become fields, paths, trees and clouds.
