À propos de l’œuvre

Champs de fleurs en Hollande, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · April 1883 · The Hague, Netherlands

Flower fields in Holland, F186Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Rectangles of pink, yellow, white and blue tulips and hyacinths converge on dark houses. This April 1883 landscape is one of the first paintings where Van Gogh made color itself the architecture of the field.

Look at the work

Flower strips like a Dutch patchwork

The flowerbeds start from the lower edge and tighten towards the horizon. A pink plot occupies the central axis; around it alternate white, pale blue, yellow and other roses separated by dirt roads.

A silhouette crosses the crops on the right. Behind her, sloping roofs and two leafless trees form a dark line under a sky almost entirely covered with cream and blue-gray clouds.

Fields of Flowers in Holland F186/JH361 is an oil on canvas mounted on wood measuring 48.9 × 66 cm, painted in The Hague in April 1883. It is kept at the National Gallery of Art in Washington under number 1983.1.21.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The perspective is immediately readable thanks to the rectilinear limits of the cultivated boards. Van Gogh contrasts this colorful geometry with the irregular contours of houses, trees and clouds.

01

The plots create depth

The strips are wide in the foreground then become narrow near the farms. The low view gives the flowers a monumental presence despite the small scale of each plant.

02

The colors remain separate

Each board has a clear dominant: white, pink, blue or yellow. Brown paths prevent these areas from mixing and structure the surface like the seams of a fabric.

03

The sky softens the geometry

Short light touches build a moving sheet of clouds. The blue openings and diffuse contours respond to the cold colors of the flowers without repeating their straight lines.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The National Gallery of Art documents an oil on canvas on wood measuring 48.9 × 66 cm and makes its image available for open access. References F186/JH361 and the dating from April 1883 specify its place in the Hague period.

What the painter must preserve

The painter must respect the precise convergence of the plots, the white-pink-blue-yellow succession, the walking silhouette, the brown farms and the large expanse of clear clouds.

  • The flower strips converging towards the horizon
  • The pink plot in the center
  • The little silhouette on the right
  • The farms and the two bare trees
  • The cream clouds crossed with blue
