Vincent van Gogh · End of November - beginning of December 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
In front of the purple Alpilles, green and ocher fields lead to the Mas de Saint-Paul; due to lack of new canvas, Van Gogh painted this vast landscape on a tablecloth with small red tiles.
Look at the work
The foreground is a green and yellow expanse covered with long horizontal touches. An isolated tree stands slightly to the right of the center. Further on, the low farm and its ocher dovecote form a warm line in front of the purple and jagged mass of the Alpilles.
The museum explains that Van Gogh first lays the purple-brown outlines of the mountains, farm and fields, then fills the areas with flat or thick touches. The yellow-green sky remains very clear, almost incandescent above the cold reliefs.
Running out of canvas in November 1889, Van Gogh used a tablecloth whose pattern of small red squares remained visible in several unpainted areas. This unusual support is part of the material history of F721.
Composition, touch and color
The Kroeller-Müller Museum notice identifies the building as the Mas de Saint-Paul, a 17th century farm whose dovecote indicates the rank of its first owner.
Field, farm, mountain and sky follow one another in bands. The variety of touches nevertheless gives the landscape a very convincing depth.
The blue-purple mountains stand out against a yellow-green sky. This opposition makes the ridge line vibrate without resorting to a gentle atmospheric perspective.
The small red tiles of the fabric appear where the colored layer remains thin, recalling the shortage of canvas experienced by the artist.
Documented benchmarks
The KM 100.443 inventory and references F721/JH1864 distinguish this view of Mas de Saint-Paul from other mountainous landscapes painted around the asylum.
Van Gogh begins the canvas before the arrival of the ten meters of fabric requested from Theo; he therefore uses a red patterned tablecloth.
The farm still exists. Its angular extension on the roof is a dovecote, an element formerly reserved for a rank-and-file owner.
The main boundaries are drawn in a dark color before applying greens, ochres, purples and yellows.
Your reproduction
The copy must preserve the layout of the plans, the precise silhouette of the Mas and the contrast between the yellow-green sky and the purple mountains.
