Vincent van Gogh June 1889 · Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
Above a sleeping village, a blue sky begins to revolve around the stars and the moon; two black cypresses connect the earth to the great luminous currents of this vision painted in Saint-Rémy.
Look at the work
Two dark cypresses rise from the foreground and exceed the horizon. The village stretches below, gathered around a sharp bell tower. Behind the roofs, the hills form a long blue wave which responds to the swirls of the sky.
Eleven stars and the moon are surrounded by yellow, green and white rings. A large light band spirals through the center, then divides into smaller currents. Cobalt blue, ultramarine and blue-gray dominate, punctuated by orange windows.
Van Gogh is inspired by the oriental view from his room, but the village with the bell tower is not a faithful transcription of Saint-Rémy. The painting brings together observation, memories of the North and pictorial invention.
Composition, touch and color
The MoMA notice confirms June 1889, the format of 73.7 × 92.1 cm and the number 472.1941; F612/JH1731 identifies this world-famous canvas.
Their black silhouette starts from the ground and enters the sky. It visually connects the still village to cosmic whirlwinds.
The large white and blue current runs through the canvas from left to right, organizing the movement of all the smaller halos.
The very bright star near the cypress is often identified with Venus, visible in the sky before dawn in the spring of 1889.
Documented benchmarks
Starry Night belongs to the nocturnal landscapes of Saint-Rémy and entered the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in 1941.
The relief and certain elements come from the view from the asylum, while the village and its bell tower are largely recomposed.
MoMA obtains the work by exchange thanks to the bequest Lillie P. Bliss; it bears the number 472.1941.
These references make it possible to distinguish this starry night canvas on the Rhône, painted in Arles in September 1888.
Your reproduction
The copy must preserve the hierarchy of movements, the density of blues and concentric halos without reducing the sky to a simple decorative motif.
