À propos de l’œuvre
Champs de blé avec Auvers en arrière-plan, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France
View of Auvers with wheat fieldReproduction of oil painting on canvas
Wheat occupies almost the entire foreground and pushes the village towards a thin strip of horizon. Van Gogh combines the yellows of the field with the blues, greens and pinks of the houses to make Auvers a colorful extension of the countryside.
Look at the work
Beyond appears beyond a sea of wheat
The ears are constructed by a multitude of yellow, green and orange lines which follow several directions. A dark line separates the field from the houses. In the background, the roofs and facades respond to each other in small blue, pink and cream shapes.
The village bell tower does not dominate the composition: it blends into the horizon and is even partially cut by the framing. This organization gives priority to the field. The thick, undulating touch visually brings vegetation, buildings and distant reliefs together.
The village is not placed behind the field like a decoration: it seems to be born from the same colored material as wheat.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The Geneva canvas is distinguished by its yellow field occupying two thirds of the image, its compact village and its horizontal format of 44 × 51.5 cm.
A first monumental plan
The wheat is placed very close to the viewer and leaves no road to enter the scene. The repeated touches alone create depth.
A village in frieze
The houses form a discontinuous band under the sky. The blue contours and pink accents avoid a harsh separation between architecture and landscape.
Related colors
Yellows from the field reappear on the walls, while blues from the sky descend into the shadows. This circulation unifies the entire composition.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Geneva Museum of Art and History preserves the work under the title View of Auvers with wheat field, with inventory number 1990-0055.
The fields around Auvers
During the last two months of his life, Van Gogh traveled the surroundings of the village daily and multiplied his views on the crops and houses.
Entered the museum in 1990
The work belongs to the collections of the Geneva Museum of Art and History, where it is identified by its own inventory.
A small, very dense canvas
With 44 × 51.5 cm, the composition is tighter than several large landscapes of Auvers. The density of the keys, however, gives it a strong presence.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The painter must maintain the difference between the tight touches of wheat and the small architectural forms, while maintaining the chromatic continuity between the field and the village.
- The changing directions of the ears in the foreground
- The dark strip that separates the field from the village
- The little blue, pink and cream houses of the horizon
- The clear sky treated with horizontal and nuanced touches
