Champs de blé avec meules, par Vincent van Gogh

Wheat fields with millstones, JH1478Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Under an immense sky laden with blue and white clouds, small millstones punctuate a green plain. A few red houses and a line of trees mark the horizon, reduced to tiny signs by the magnitude of the air.
Look at the work
A small field under a monumental sky
The sky occupies almost two thirds of the format and weighs on a very low strip of countryside. The millstones are distributed at different distances, from the large dark shape of the foreground to the small touches close to the horizon.
In the field, greens are cut with yellows, ochres and short blues. Above, the clouds are painted by wider and more flexible passages which give the sky its movement.
Painted in Arles in June 1888, this oil on canvas measuring 28.5 × 37 cm is registered under JH1478 without Faille number. It belongs to a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Despite its small format, the canvas builds a very ample depth. The opposition between the low countryside and the large cloudy sky gives each millstone a role as a landmark in space.
The sky dominates the composition
The blue and white masses advance in broad bands, while the thin horizon seems to recede far behind the field.
Grinding wheels measure distance
Their decreasing size and irregular distribution lead the gaze from the foreground to the red houses in the background.
Color animates a very simple plain
Yellows, cool greens, dark blue and a few pinks interrupt the grassy surface without dividing it into rigid patches.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
This work belongs to the series of fields and harvests painted around Arles in June 1888. It is identified by the Hulsker catalog under JH1478, but does not have a number in the Faille catalog.
JH1478, without number Fault
The canvas was integrated into the Hulsker catalog after the establishment of the Faille system, hence the absence of an F reference.
A study of 28.5 × 37 cm
Its reduced format contrasts with the scale of the sky and explains the conciseness of the houses, trees and millstones on the horizon.

In your interior
A fresh and open landscape of Arles
The horizontal format visually enlarges a small wall or bookcase. Sky blue, meadow green, straw yellow and discreet red make up a calm scene despite the movement of the clouds.
