Tulip fields in Holland W1067hand painted reproduction

Strips of red, yellow, pink and purple tulips cross the Dutch plain to a mill and some houses. The large red triangle in the foreground gives the field a spectacular depth, under a blue sky filled with white clouds. Signed and dated Claude Monet 86 lower left, this oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 81.5 cm is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the number RF 1944 19 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1067.

Look at the work

Rows of flowers make color the main instrument of perspective

A red band widens sharply towards the lower edge then tightens near the mill. Around it, the yellow, green and purple plots follow neighboring directions, like a fan placed on the plain.

The mill and the houses remain small but very readable thanks to a few verticals and dark roofs. The sky occupies almost half of the canvas; its pale blues and generous clouds balance the saturation of the fields.

Here, depth does not depend on a path or an architecture: it arises directly from the widening of the color bands.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A red triangle moving towards the viewer

The most intense plot starts from the mill and opens up to the foreground. It gives the major axis of the composition and its feeling of immediacy.

02

The mill as a point of convergence

Its dark wings cross the sky near the center. This small shape is enough to bring together the lines of the fields and measure the immensity of the plain.

03

A sky built with the same touch

The clouds are not smoothed: blues, whites and pinks are juxtaposed in visible touches, responding to the material of the tulips.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single high-definition reference image measures 2,536 × 2,044 px. It is encoded in real WebP at its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Maintain the separation of flower strips

Red, yellow, pink and mauve should remain distinct while sharing irregular green transitions.

Color02

Preserve the smallness of the mill

Enlarging it would weaken the depth. Its role is that of a precise landmark in the middle of a landscape dominated by fields.

Matter03

Keep the clouds bright and colorful

Bluish grays and very pale pinks prevent whites from becoming opaque and maintain air circulation.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The national POP-Ja Lisa database documents Tulip fields in Holland, oil on canvas from 1886, 65.5 × 81.5 cm, signed and dated lower left, inventory RF 1944 19 and catalog Wildenstein 1067.

Travel01

A stay in Holland in the spring of 1886

Invited by Baron d'Estournelles de Constant, then embassy secretary in The Hague, Monet discovered the flowery fields and painted several views in May.

Exposure02

Presented in 1886 by Georges Petit

The POP notice marks the painting at the fifth international painting exhibition at the Georges Petit gallery, then at the Monet-Rodin exhibition of 1889.

Collection03

Acquired by the state in 1904

Former collection of Princess Edmond de Polignac, the painting entered the national collections in 1904 and was assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1067 version
  • The large plot of red tulips
  • The mill at the convergence point
  • The blue sky with white and pink clouds

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal landscape is suitable for a dining room, living room or bright entrance. A gray blue, almond green or ivory wall and a blond frame allow its reds to retain their shine.
