À propos de l’œuvre
Pêcheur sur la plage, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · August 1882 · The Hague, Netherlands
Fisherman on the beach, F5Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A young fisherman stands alone, standing on the beach, a basket placed on his shoulder and a roll of rope at his feet. Van Gogh isolates the figure against a sea reduced to a few pale bands and gives it an almost life-size presence.
Look at the work
A frontal figure facing the sea
The fisherman occupies almost the entire height. His gray jacket, his sleeves rolled up and his dark pants are placed in wide masses; his face, without strong details, remains reddened by the wind.
The yellow-green beach and the blue-gray sea form a very bare bottom. The basket or rope placed near the right foot balances the arm that holds the load on the shoulder.
Fisherman on the Beach F5/JH188 is an oil on canvas mounted on a 51 × 33.5 cm panel painted in The Hague in August 1882. It is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum in Otterlo under number KM 104.318.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The simplicity of the pose focuses attention on the garment, the weight of the work and the stability of the body. The touch remains broad, but each mass contributes to the balance of the silhouette.
The body forms a vertical axis
The head, torso and legs align in the center. This frontality transforms a worker's study into a monumental figure despite the absence of detailed decoration.
Gray contains colors
The jacket combines olive green, blue, brown and lighter reflections. Temperature variations shape volume without resorting to spectacular light.
The bottom remains deliberately thin
A few horizontals are enough to indicate the sand, waves and horizon. The sea does not tell of a landscape: it locates the loom and leaves plenty of room for the fisherman.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
Identification F5/JH188 corresponds to a fisherman's figure painted in August 1882, today at the Kroeller-Müller Museum. Its museum inventory is KM 104.318.
Kroeller-Müller Museum
The Otterlo Museum preserves one of Van Gogh's most important collections. This vertical study is registered there under number KM 104.318.
A coastal worker
Van Gogh then looks for figures from real life. The basket, rope and practical clothing identify the character without picturesque staging.
August 1882
The work belongs to the group of studies painted in Scheveningen during the summer, alongside the Fisherman's Wife F6 and net repair scenes.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must respect the frontality of the character, the precise cut of the jacket, the poorly detailed hands, the rope near the foot and the thin horizontal bands of sea behind him.
- The vertical silhouette placed in the center
- The nuanced greens and grays of the jacket
- The red-brown face without excessive details
- The roller or basket near the right foot
- The light strips of the beach and the sea
