A land mass that dominates the composition
The cliff forms a wide and irregular triangle which carries the house. Its visual weight is balanced by the clear opening of the sea and the sky on the right third.

Claude Monet · Pourville · 1882 · W734
Under a purple-gray sky, a house with a red roof shelters in the cliff while the pale sea opens to the right. The greens of the embankment remain luminous despite the overcast weather, and a few tiny sails introduce an almost silent depth. Painted in 1882, this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 73 cm, signed and dated lower right, belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 734.

Look at the work
The promontory rises from the lower left edge and occupies more than half of the canvas. The house is placed near the center, slightly set back, surrounded by vegetation mixing olive green, turquoise, yellow and purple. Its orange roof constitutes the only warm and clearly identifiable mass.
On the right, the gray green sea joins an overcast sky without brutal contrast. A strip of darker coastline advances into the distance, while several light sails punctuate the water. The diffused light softens the volumes but leaves the signature and date visible in the lower right corner.
The overcast sky does not reduce the color: it moves it towards the cliff, where the greens, mauves and orange of the roof become more intense against the pale sea.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The cliff forms a wide and irregular triangle which carries the house. Its visual weight is balanced by the clear opening of the sea and the sky on the right third.
Red, orange and pink focus on a small area. This accent allows you to measure the distance and immediately identify the home in the middle of a plot of land painted with very free touches.
Overcast weather is based on milky blues, cold greens and mauves. The sea and sky remain distinct by brush direction and slight differences in value.
Reference image
A single exact image of W734 is used throughout the sheet and as the sole media for the product. The real WebP measures 1702 × 1400 px, preserved in its useful native definition without artificial enlargement.
The building should not become the only subject. It remains partially caught in the relief and serves as a scale for the entire cliff.
Grays are colored pink and purple. A reproduction that is too cold or uniformly gray would remove the nuanced atmosphere that distinguishes this version on overcast days.
Boats from the distance are reduced to a few clear touches. Their discretion creates distance and should not compete with the red roof.
Documented benchmarks
The Fisherman's House, Overcast Weather is an oil on canvas from 1882 measuring 60 × 73 cm, signed and dated, listed as Wildenstein 734 and today kept in a private collection.
Monet took over the fisherman's house from several positions during his stay in Normandy. W734 belongs to the close group where the building is placed in the cliff, with variations in framing and atmospheric conditions.
The painting was linked to the merchant Paul Durand-Ruel in the spring of 1882. It then belonged to several private collections and was presented to the public as part of the Seeing Nature exhibition.
The Seattle Art Museum presented this work in 2017 in Seeing Nature, an exhibition dedicated to landscape from the Paul G. Allen collection. Its current location is not made public.

Presentation in your interior
This coastal landscape is suitable for a living room, bedroom or office. A warm gray, sage green or very pale mauve wall and a natural setting reinforce its calm atmosphere without extinguishing the red roof.
