On Étretat beach, several fishing boats are pulled on the pebbles at the foot of the Amont cliff. Their green, white and brown hulls and pale sails spread out in front of a blue sea; the rocky arch and the chapel dominate the right side. Painted in 1885, this oil on canvas measuring 60 × 81 cm is kept at the Eugène-Boudin museum under number 64.1.2 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1013.

Look at the work

Boats, pebbles and cliff form three tight planes on Étretat beach

The foreground is occupied by fragments of hulls and sails which partially enter the frame. Further on, a large green boat placed at an angle leads towards the shore boats and creates a depth without a central axis.

The right cliff is painted gray, pink, brown and white, with verticals that suggest chalk breaks. The opening of the Porte d'Amont becomes a very dark blue area above the sea, while the small chapel punctuates the ridge.

Monet does not separate the work of fishermen from the landscape: the colored hulls, pebbles and chalk walls belong to the same movement of light.

A deliberately cluttered framing in the foreground

The boats are cut by the edges and overlap. This proximity places the viewer on the beach, among the boats, rather than at a distance in front of a tourist view.

A cliff rendered by vertical touches

Descending lines make the height and erosion of the rock felt. Reflected blues and pinks prevent the chalk from turning white and flat.

Colors of boats that liven up the pebbles

Greens, mauves, browns and whites repeat from one shell to another. These distributed accents give rhythm to a beach whose tones otherwise remain very light.

Keep the shells cut at the left edge

This framing gives the impression of a larger fleet off-camera. Refocusing all boats would reduce the immersion and depth of W1013.

Color02

Preserve the Upstream Gate as a dark blue hollow

The arch should remain readable in the cliff without becoming a uniform black hole. Its colored edges belong to ambient light.

Matter03

Keep the keys short on the pebbles and foam

The shore is animated by irregular material. Smooth surfaces would eliminate the difference between wet beach, sea and rock wall.
