À propos de l’œuvre

Plat aux agrumes, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · February -March 1887 · Paris

Citrus dish, F338Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two oranges and three lemons rest on a white dish seen from above, in front of a brown background covered with extremely fine hatching. Van Gogh experiments here with a diluted oil painting which leaves the small format with a matte and almost graphic appearance.

Look at the work

Five simple fruits become a study of parallel lines

The dish occupies almost the entire width and forms a large clear ellipse on the blue-green table. Citrus fruits overlap in the left half, leaving a large empty area on the right that makes the composition breathe.

Each fruit is shaped by short green, red, yellow and brown lines. The same network of lines continues in the background, but changes direction to detach the outline of the dish and the volumes.

Citrus dish F338/JH1237 is a 21.5 × 27.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris in February - March 1887. It is kept at the Van Gogh Museum under number s0193V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The material is deliberately thin, but the surface remains very constructed. Hatching direction, line density and color contrasts replace the thick impasto often associated with Van Gogh.

01

Hatching follows the volume of each citrus fruit

The lines curve around the oranges and lemons, changing color with the light. Their repetition gives weight to shapes painted with very little material.

02

The white dish stabilizes the composition

Its light ellipse frames the fruit and creates a break between the blue of the table and the brown of the wall. A few gray and green lines are enough to define its edge.

03

The background becomes a field of graphic experimentation

Long vertical lines are crossed by diagonals and denser areas. This frame vibrates an otherwise almost uniform background.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F338/JH1237, inventory s0193V1962 and dimensions of 21.5 × 27.5 cm identify this small Parisian still life.

Technique

Van Gogh uses gasoline paint

It dilutes the oil and works on an absorbent preparation. The result is matte, translucent and very different from a surface loaded with impasto.

Brush

Some lines measure less than half a millimeter

The museum highlights the extreme fineness of the hatching. Van Gogh uses his thinnest brushes to draw the fruit and the background.

Period

This experiment belongs to the beginning of 1887

In Paris, Van Gogh tested several ways of applying color. Here, the parallel touch and diluted paint become the technical subject of the work.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the small scale, the ellipse of the dish, the separation between oranges and lemons, the curved hatching of the fruits, the turquoise table and the brown network of the background.

  • The two pink oranges placed on the left
  • The three yellow and olive green lemons
  • The green lines that shape each fruit
  • The gray-blue edge of the white dish
  • Vertical and diagonal hatching of the background
