A mass of dahlias and foliage rises from the lower edge and covers more than half of the painting. Beyond this plant curtain, the Seine sparkles under a pale yellow sky; the silhouettes of Argenteuil, its church and its chimneys stand out in the mist. Monet brings the flowers very close to make you feel the shore before letting your gaze cross the water towards the modern city.

Look at the work

A foreground of flowers almost at eye level

White, pale blue and red dahlias emerge from a very dark network of leaves and stems. Monet does not distribute them like a decorative bouquet: some flowers are cut by the frame, others are lost in the greens, and several stems rise to the river.

The Seine forms a light strip above the vegetation. A boat and a few tiny figures appear near the bank. On the other side, the Argenteuil church, houses and industrial chimneys make up a gray silhouette, lit by a sky where yellow, pink and blue mingle.

The flowers appear close enough to be touched, while the city becomes a distant form suspended in the light.

Corollas are formed by white, blue or red touches placed on green masses. Their edge remains open so that each flower participates in the vibration of the foliage.

A warm light beyond the greens

The pinkish yellow sky and silver water contrast with the deep foreground. This opposition pushes the city back and gives the dahlias an almost tactile presence.
