Look at the work

A portrait of absence through objects

The curved wooden armchair, more elegant than Van Gogh's rustic chair, is seen slightly from above. On its green seat rest two books with colorful covers and a candle. These objects associate Gauguin with modern literature, reflection and night work.

The green wall and the brown red carpet close the space. The bottom gas lamp and the candle flame create two bright foci, but the whole remains dense and dark. The blue contours, curves of the wood and diagonals of the floor give the piece of furniture an almost human presence.

The empty seat becomes Gauguin's substitute: it is a counterpart to Van Gogh's La Chaise, simpler, clearer and associated with daylight.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The reproduction must retain the desired opposition between the sophisticated armchair, the nocturnal atmosphere and the intellectual objects placed on the seat.

01

A character chair

Curved armrests surround the seat like arms. The high viewpoint makes the furniture immediately present while emphasizing that it is empty.

02

Books and candles

Both modern novels and the flame replace the usual attributes of a portrait. They suggest thought, reading and nocturnal creation.

03

Red versus green

The red brown carpet and the green wall form an intense opposition. Blue outlines connect the armchair to this complementary range.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F499/JH1636 forms with La Chaise de Van Gogh F498 a symbolic diptych dedicated to the two artists who then shared the Yellow House.

During

Two chairs, two temperaments

Van Gogh's simple chair is shown in a daytime light; Gauguin's armchair appears at night with books and a candle.

Execution

December 1888

Van Gogh began painting during cohabitation with Gauguin and took it up again after their breakup in January 1889.

Collection

s0048V1962

The work is kept at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam with its counterpart dedicated to the artist's own chair.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the irregular curves of the armchair, the small details of the books and the glow of the candle within a deliberately deep range.

  • The curved structure of the wooden armchair
  • The two modern novels placed on the seat
  • The candle and its little yellow flame
  • The gas lamp visible on the wall
  • The contrast of the red brown carpet and the green wall

In your interior

A nighttime icon with deep colors

The vertical format and the deep reds, greens and blues give a strong presence to a living room, a library or an office. The painting works particularly well with dark wood.
