A woman dressed in white sits almost in profile in the tall grass, under young willows whose trunks occupy the entire height of the painting. Its light silhouette remains small compared to the green, blue and yellow abundance of the garden; behind it, a luminous strip reveals houses on the other bank. Signed and dated 1880, this oil on canvas measuring 81.1 × 60 cm is kept in the National Gallery of Art under the number 1963.10.178 and corresponds to Wildenstein 613.
Look at the work
The vertical format accompanies the willow momentum. The trunks branch from the first third and their thin branches form a clear, almost transparent vault. The woman is placed at the bottom right, so that the eye first passes through the foliage before recognizing her face, hat and dress.
On the ground, crescent touches mix emerald green, lemon, blue and white. The dress takes on these colors with pink and mauve accents; it is therefore never cut out as a shape foreign to the garden. The beige band and the pale blue constructions of the background discreetly open the depth.
Human presence reveals itself without interrupting the impression of the outdoors: Monet paints the woman, the grass and the willows with the same fragmented light.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The silhouette occupies a small part of the canvas and does not look at the viewer. Its leftward orientation, abundance of grass and height of trees make the scene a study of the garden as much as a representation of a person.
Blues, lilacs, greens and ochres run along the trunks without completely blending in. These lines give the bark its direction and let air pass between the branches instead of forming a dark mass.
The light strip behind the figure could be a path or the river. Beyond, a few touches of periwinkle blue indicate the buildings; their low contrast maintains attention in the nearby vegetation.

The single image comes from the open scan of the National Gallery of Art. The source file of 2940 × 4000 px is limited to 2205 × 3000 px then encoded as a real WebP.
Enlarging it would tip the work towards conventional portraiture. Its precise size allows the willows to give the scale of the place and retains the sensation of an encounter in the middle of the grass.
The ground is not a flat green. Its warm and cool colors alternate around the coat, describing areas of sunlight and preventing vegetation from becoming uniform.
They must remain light despite their large number. Too strong lines would form a grid; too little material would make the curtain of willows which structures W613 disappear.
Documented benchmarks
The National Gallery of Art documents Woman Seated under the Willows, oil on canvas from 1880, 81.1 × 60 cm, inventory 1963.10.178 and catalog Wildenstein 613.
The signature painted black directly places the date before the name. She distinguishes this vertical version from other views of willows made in Vétheuil.
The Chester Dale Collection catalogs have published the work under this title. The current institutional notice remains cautious and simply designates a seated woman, without imposing an identity on the model.
Durand-Ruel sold the painting to Chester Dale on November 22, 1927. The collector bequeathed it in 1963 to the National Gallery of Art with a major collection of French paintings.
