A plant mass built by gestures
Branches, brush and trunks merge, but changes in brush direction make their volumes felt. The vigor of the execution remains visible even in the palest areas.

Artwork description
Claude Monet · Giverny · 1885 · W963
Two small dark silhouettes advance on a frozen path, at the foot of a curtain of trees covered in frost. The vegetation occupies the entire right half and dissolves into blues, mauves, pinks and whites; on the left, the landscape opens towards a milky sky. Signed lower left, this oil on canvas from 1885 measures 54 × 71 cm, bears the number MB-Mon-18 at Museum Barberini and corresponds to Wildenstein 963.

Look at the work
The road and the sky are treated by wide and clear layers, while the branches receive nervous lines, loops and impasto. Monet therefore distinguishes the ground, trees and atmosphere less by their local color than by the direction and density of his touch.
The two walkers, placed very low on the left, are the only clearly vertical elements on a human scale. Their small size gives a measure of the frosty massif and opens a depth towards the pink and yellow area which shines behind them.
The cold is not represented by a uniform white: it arises from the friction between the icy blues, the diffuse pinks, the purple grays and some yellow accents which still seem to retain the light.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Branches, brush and trunks merge, but changes in brush direction make their volumes felt. The vigor of the execution remains visible even in the palest areas.
Placed side by side at the side of the road, they contrast with the light frost and indicate the scale of the landscape. They also guide the eye towards the bright opening on the left.
The boundary between sky, trees and ground remains fluid. Blues pass from the branches to the snow and roses from the bottom to the path, giving the whole the unity of the same cold atmosphere.

The only image from Museum Barberini is kept at 3,000 × 2,260 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
They should remain dark accents and not detailed characters. Their exact position supports the depth and asymmetrical balance of the painting.
Frost areas still contain grays, pinks and blues. Too bright reproduction would cause the structure of the branches to disappear.
Vegetation should not be smoothed. The superimposed lines and visible impasto constitute the material subject of this W963 version.
Documented benchmarks
The Museum Barberini preserves Le Givre à Giverny, oil on canvas signed from 1885, 54 × 71 cm, inventory MB-Mon-18 and Wildenstein 963.
Presented in 1939 under the title Givre au Bois de Boulogne, the painting is today correctly located in Giverny and listed under the number Wildenstein 963.
The museum emphasizes their role: in the middle of fluid and sketched areas, these two silhouettes immediately give scale and direction to the landscape.
Monet varies the brush strokes to distinguish the ground, vegetation and sky, then connects them with white, pink and blue accents.
