The Orchard in Flowers, F552Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

In a Provençal orchard, long brown branches bear white and soft green flowers; a scythe and a rake left in the grass discreetly evoke human labor.

Look at the work

An orchard in full awakening under the mistral

The main trunk divides in the center into angular branches that rise to the upper edge. Behind it, other trees form a clearer network, while a house and a fence appear through the foliage.

The grass is made up of small green, yellow, red and blue touches placed vertically. The scythe and the rake cross at the bottom right, the only signs of a human presence in this figureless landscape.

Between late March and late April 1888, Van Gogh painted fourteen orchards around Arles. The Metropolitan Museum highlights the influence of Japanese prints in the stretched branches and the vertical framing of this canvas.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Inventory 56.13 and references F552/JH1381 identify the Met Flowering Orchard, which measures 72.4 × 53.3 cm.

01

Calligraphic branches

The red-brown outlines run across the sky like written signs. They organize the composition even before the colors.

02

Flowering without pure white

The flowers mix off-white, pale green, blue and yellow, which integrates them with the changing light of the sky.

03

Tools in the grass

The scythe and the rake introduce the work of the orchard without showing the gardener. They also give a scale in the foreground.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Van Gogh writes to Theo that he wants to paint an extraordinarily cheerful Provençal orchard and works quickly before the flowers disappear.

Series

Fourteen orchards

The Met places the painting in the flowering campaign carried out in Arles between the end of March and the end of April 1888.

Presence

Fake and rake

This composition is one of two views in the series where tools explicitly suggest human activity.

Collection

Number 56.13

The painting entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1956 thanks to the Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ittleson Jr.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must restore the irregular design of the branches, the lightness of the flowers and the thousands of small colorful touches of the grass.

  • The branched trunk in the center
  • White and tender green flowers
  • The scythe and the rake crossed
  • The house visible between the trees
  • Red and blue touches in the grass
