À propos de l’œuvre
Verger en fleurs, bordé de cyprès, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · April 1888 · Arles
Orchard in bloom lined with cypress trees, F513Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Two yellow reed fences open the entrance to a flowering orchard. Gray trunks, rowed vegetables and almost black cypresses stand out under a vast blue sky.
Look at the work
A Provençal orchard entrance transformed into a decor of lines and colors
The path starts from the lower edge and divides around the flower beds. The side fences act like slides: they lead towards the white and yellow fruit trees, then towards the vertical row of cypresses.
Van Gogh hardly models volumes by shadow. Rather, it juxtaposes the yellows of the earth and reeds, the greens of vegetables, the white of flowers and the blue of the sky to make spring fresh.
Orchard in bloom bordered by cypress is an oil on canvas measuring 64.9 × 81.2 cm painted in Arles in April 1888. The work F513/JH1389 is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 108.685.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The instructions from the Kroeller-Müller Museum identify here the entrance to a Provençal orchard, its fences against the mistral, its black cypresses and its crops of several greens. The absence of clear shadows already announces a trend towards stylization.
Yellow fences build a threshold
Placed on either side, they tighten the foreground then free up the view in the center. The eye thus enters the orchard instead of remaining in front of a simple facade of trees.
Cypresses give vertical measurement
Their dark, pointed silhouettes punctuate the entire horizon. They oppose a firm structure to the irregular sparkle of flowering branches.
The key remains voluntarily without a system
Impasto, thinner areas and small canvas spaces coexist. Van Gogh maintains the speed and recovery of work instead of artificially unifying the surface.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The references F513/JH1389, the dimensions 64.9 × 81.2 cm and the KM 108.685 inventory distinguish this large composition of F554, much smaller, and F551, centered on peach trees.
One of fourteen orchards from spring 1888
Van Gogh worked quickly during the short flowering of the fruit trees. The series forms its first large painted ensemble after its arrival in Arles.
Cypresses still observed as a novelty
The museum reminds us that their shape and color fascinate Van Gogh. In Saint-Rémy, these trees will then become central and autonomous subjects.
Precisely described vegetables
The instructions bring together the green and yellow touches of lettuce, onions, garlic and leeks grown between the trees, rather than seeing abstract soil.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must retain the opening between the two fences, the rows of vegetables, the light fruit trees, the succession of dark cypresses and the deep breathing of the blue sky.
- The two yellow reed fences
- The central path lined with cultures
- White and pale yellow flowers
- The vertical frieze of black cypresses
- The blue sky with turquoise variations
