Verger en fleurs, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · April 1889 · Arles, then resumed in Saint-Rémy

Look at the work

A light orchard where trees, flowers and sky blend in harmony

The gnarled trunks run diagonally from the left and open intervals on the meadow. Their thin branches cross until they form a continuous network of blue, gray, pink and white.

The ground alternates long green hatching and small yellow or white touches. At the bottom, the fence and the railway line give a very clear horizontal structure to this moving vegetation.

Orchard in Flowers is a 73.2 × 93.1 cm oil on canvas started in Arles and dated April 1889 by the Van Gogh Museum. Referenced F511/JH1386, it bears the inventory number s0038V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Van Gogh Museum identifies trees as plum trees. Van Gogh then took the painting to Saint-Rémy and continued to rework it from memory, searching in his words for a better way to express "the harmony of tones".

01

The branches make up a veil before the sky

Their blue-gray lines overlap with the small light flowers. This fine weft softens the separation between the top of the orchard and the pale sky.

02

The meadow advances in layers of greens

Vertical touches in the foreground become shorter near the fence. A few yellow, pink and white accents suggest the flowers without isolating them.

03

The railway discreetly closes the depth

Its horizontality contrasts with the leaning trunks. Small buildings and red elements provide precise landmarks in a very clear background.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The current notice from the Van Gogh Museum gives April 1889, 73.2 × 93.1 cm and inventory s0038V1962. References F511/JH1386 link the painting to Van Gogh's research on flowering orchards.

Botany

A plum orchard

The museum here distinguishes plum trees among the many fruit trees painted around Arles: apricot trees, almond trees, apple trees and peach trees appear in other paintings.

Resumption

The canvas pursued from memory in Saint-Rémy

Dissatisfied, Van Gogh took the painting with him when he left Arles. He then reworks the tones and colored relationships without having the orchard in front of him.

Dating

Museum holds today April 1889

Stylistic and technical research led to this version being placed a year after the first major campaign of the Arles orchards.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must retain the delicate network of branches, the blue-gray trunks, the very light flowers, the green streaks of the meadow and the thin red railway line at the bottom.

  • The gnarled blue-gray trunks
  • The veil of small white flowers
  • The meadow streaked with greens
  • The horizontal fence
  • Red accents near the railway tracks
