A depth built by the trunks
The trees in the foreground are sharper and more contrasted, then their intervals narrow towards the houses. This succession is enough to organize the space despite the absence of path or obvious geometric perspective.

Claude Monet · Fruit trees and houses of Argenteuil · Private collection
An orchard with yellow and green foliage extends in front of a row of light houses. Thin trunks punctuate the foreground, while large, softer trees rise in the center and merge with a gray-blue sky. Monet does not look for a spectacular motif: he transforms an ordinary suburban space into a network of touches where vegetation, facades and atmospheric light become almost inseparable.

Look at the work
Fine trunks start from the lower edge and divide the meadow into irregular intervals. Their tops bear yellow, green and ocher leaves, rendered in small separate touches. In the center, taller trees form a light vault whose dark branches remain visible through the foliage.
Houses occupy the background without completely closing the perspective. Creamy gray walls, brown roofs, fireplaces and blue windows appear between the branches. The pale sky also enters the orchard, so that the contours of the more distant trees seem to dissolve into the air.
The orchard is neither quite countryside nor quite an urban garden: Monet precisely paints this moving border of Argenteuil.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The trees in the foreground are sharper and more contrasted, then their intervals narrow towards the houses. This succession is enough to organize the space despite the absence of path or obvious geometric perspective.
Monet reduces the buildings to a few light rectangles and blue accents. Their architecture remains readable, but it shares the same grays, greens and yellows as the branches; the city thus appears contained in the landscape.
Nearby grasses and leaves are laid by short, colorful signs. The large trees at the bottom use lighter smears, and the sky remains almost smooth. These changes in material give air to a composition that is nevertheless very dense.
Reference image
The reference photograph shows Le Verger during the "Impressionisti Segreti" exhibition at the Palazzo Bonaparte in Rome. Its format of 2,048 × 1,464 px has been preserved as a real WebP, without artificial enlargement.
Their color changes depending on the light and surrounding foliage. A series of identical brown lines would cause the atmospheric effect and depth to lose.
They light up fruit trees without invading the entire scene. Their intensity increases in places, then diminishes in more distant parts and shadows.
Branches and foliage interrupt their facades. Reconstructing continuous contours would artificially place them in front of the orchard instead of keeping them in the background.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1874, this oil on canvas measures 59 × 80 cm. It belongs to a private collection and bears the number Wildenstein 310.
Monet lived in Argenteuil from 1871 to 1878 and explored the banks of the Seine as well as gardens, orchards and still rural areas. The houses behind the trees make the gradual expansion of the city noticeable.
The format of 59 × 80 cm, the date of 1874 and the composition of the fruit trees in front of the houses distinguish this Orchard from the numerous gardens and flowering trees painted by Monet at other periods.
The work was featured in the exhibition "Impressionisti Segreti", organized from 2019 to 2020. The color photography used as a reference documents its appearance during this temporary presentation.
