À propos de l’œuvre

Le Bosquet, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · July 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

The GroveReproduction of oil painting on canvas

In this horizonless undergrowth, thin trunks stand in the middle of a tight network of yellow, green and blue leaves. Van Gogh transforms forest depth into an almost continuous vibrant surface.

Look at the work

A curtain of trees where light circulates in touches

The vertical trunks divide the entire width without forming a dominant foreground. Some are light green, others purple-brown or blue. Between them, the foliage is laid in small yellow and green commas which barely reveal the ground.

The right of the canvas becomes warmer, with oranges and browns, while the left remains dominated by acidic greens. A few bouquets of pale flowers cross the center. No sky opens the scene: the gaze remains inside the grove.

Depth arises less from perspective than from the superposition of trunks, the variable density of keys and the gradual transition from green to orange.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work F817 can be recognized by its horizontal format of 73 × 92 cm, the absence of sky, the numerous slender trunks and the orange zone which warms the right side.

01

A space without escape

The horizon line disappears behind the foliage. The viewer does not observe the wood from the outside: it is placed among the trees.

02

Trunks as a measure

The calmer verticals stabilize the multitude of small touches. Their irregular spacing gives a rhythm without transforming the forest into a grid.

03

Cold green to orange

Color gradually changes across the width. This transition suggests different light on the right and avoids the uniformity of a fully leafy scene.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Le Bosquet is an oil on canvas of 73 × 92 cm painted in Auvers in July 1890. Preserved in a private collection, it is listed under numbers F817 and JH1319.

Catalog

F817 · JH1319

These references correct the identification of the work. F786 belongs to the square portrait of Adeline Ravoux and does not correspond to this landscape.

Format

73 × 92 cm

The painting is a large horizontal composition, not a small vertical study. The width allows you to deploy the transition from greens to orange tones.

Conservation

Private collection

The work was notably documented in the former Joseph H. Hazen collection in New York. The catalogs today indicate it as a private collection.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must restore the density without blocking the undergrowth: each trunk must remain legible and the luminous yellows must circulate between the greens.

  • The numerous vertical trunks in different colors
  • Total absence of strip of sky or horizon
  • The clear bouquets that cross the center
  • The transition from cold greens to right oranges
