A walkway crosses the shadow of a Dutch garden

The light railing forms a powerful diagonal that goes up towards the house. Its apron and parapet are constructed by grays, greens and beiges placed quickly. Under the bridge, the very dark shadow creates a visual threshold and gives weight to the foreground.

The house is never shown in full. Windows, doors and tiled roofs appear between trunks and branches. The muffled reds of the covers warm a range dominated by deep greens. The small figure in the door constitutes the only stable human point in this garden crossed by light.

The vertical format transforms the walkway into a trajectory: it connects the viewer, the dark water and the hidden house.

The Dutch stay of 1871

Monet painted the canvas in Zaandam after his visit to London. The national base underlines the rare nature of this close scene in the production of this stay.

Collection03

Bequeathed to the museum in 1921

Henry Havard bequeathed his collection to the Ursuline Museum in Mâcon in 1921, making this small canvas one of the jewels of the ensemble.
