À propos de l’œuvre
Ferme en Provence, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · June 1888 · Arles
Farm in Provence, F565Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A white road runs along a wall of colored stones towards the entrance to a farm and its millstones; in the yellow field, a man walks away under a turquoise sky covered with pink clouds.
Look at the work
A farm entrance built like a print
The wall starts from the center then winds towards the lower edge. The white road joins it on the right, between two gate pillars. Beyond stand three millstones, a farm with orange roofs and a few blue and green trees.
On the left, a small figure in pink pants crosses the field. The vertical touches of the cereals contrast with the horizontal dashes of the wall. The turquoise sky, almost flat, and the simplified shots recall Van Gogh's admiration for Japanese prints.
The National Gallery of Art links the canvas to the rapid and prepared studies of the wheat fields of Arles. Provençal light erases small details and transforms walls, crops and buildings into colorful shapes.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Inventory 1970.17.34 and references F565/JH1443 identify the small Washington canvas, which measures 46.1 × 60.9 cm.
The wall as a guideline
Its changes of angle lead from the farm to the foreground. The stones are suggested by touches of pink, blue and purple.
A figure for scale
The walking man is small but very colorful. It measures the field and gives a direction opposite to that of the road.
Complementaries in direct sunlight
Reds and greens, oranges and blues juxtapose in plants, walls and the sky to produce a luminous vibration.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The museum highlights the influence of Japanese prints and places the work in the intense Arlesian production of 1888.
Entrance to a farm
The painting was also exhibited under the title Entrance to a farm near Arles, which precisely describes the portal and the wall.
Simplified shapes
The clarity of the South allows Van Gogh to reduce the depth into colored bands, as in the prints he collects.
1970.17.34
The painting belonged to the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Collection and entered the National Gallery of Art by bequest in 1970.
