A pink path sinks between the iris beds and the fruit trees of Clos Normand. Monet does not paint a garden ordered like a plan: he superimposes mauves, greens, pinks and yellows until he makes each step towards the house a crossing of color.

Look at the work

The path shares the garden without interrupting the abundance of flowers

The path starts from the lower right edge, tightens in the center then disappears under the branches. Its warm pink forms the only relatively continuous surface of the canvas. All around, purple irises, red roses and foliage are built in small overlapping touches.

The thin trunks give a vertical structure in the foreground. Their irregular curves frame the path without creating strict symmetry. In the upper part, the crowns meet and almost close the sky: the light seems to come from flowers, yellow greens and turquoise passages rather than from an external source.

Monet makes the alley a passage in the middle of the painting itself: the flowers do not simply line the path, they advance on him and gradually dissolve his perspective.

A perspective drawn by a pink band

The path provides the main axis, but its edges remain open and eaten by flowers. Faithful reproduction must maintain this depth without drawing two rigid lines.

Purple irises spread over several planes

The flowers in the foreground are large and bluish; those at the bottom become small touches of purple. Their change of scale gives distance in the middle of very dense vegetation.

Fruit trees as a flexible framework

The brown and purple trunks cross the greens but never stand out in clear silhouettes. They organize the look while remaining caught in the colorful light of the garden.

Yale dates this oil on canvas to 1900, measures 89.5 × 92.1 cm and identifies it under the accession number 1983.7.12. Monet's catalog raisonné lists it under number 1622.

Provenance02

From Monet's studio to Paul and Rachel Mellon

The notice traces a possible visit to Georges Bernheim in 1918, then to Sir Alfred Chester Beatty and Mrs AE Pleydell-Bouverie. Wildenstein then sold it to Paul and Rachel Mellon, who gave it to Yale in 1983.

In Giverny, Monet transforms the land in front of his house into masses of successive flowering. In this canvas, the path and the fruit trees give a framework to a deliberately abundant garden.
