Look at the work

The garden almost completely absorbs architecture in the morning light

The trunks rise diagonally and vertically from very dense vegetation. In the center right, the bell tower serves as a stable landmark, but it remains partially hidden by palm fronds and branches.

Morning light combines blues, pinks, yellows and greens without frankly black areas. The foliage is suggested by their rhythm and color, while the depth is constructed by superposition.

In W866, the garden does not frame the subject: it becomes the subject, and the bell tower only remains as a clear punctuation in the middle of the vegetation.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately cluttered framing

Monet fills almost the entire surface with palm fronds, branches and plant masses. The rare openings of sky become all the brighter.

02

The bell tower as a discreet axis

The light tower is thrown to the right of the center. Its geometry responds to vertical trunks and provides a resting point amidst the winding touches of the garden.

03

The Hermitage version, W866

The dimensions of 65.5 × 81.5 cm, the inventory ̄onds-10617 and the reference Wildenstein 866 identify this impression of the morning among the numerous studies in the Moreno garden.

Composition01

Plans created by overlap

No path leads to the bottom. The depth depends on the precise order of the trunks, palm fronds and bell tower, as well as the reduction in contrasts.

Color02

A harmony of blue and pink

The blues of the sky and shadows mingle with the warm pinks of the illuminated touches. Greens serve as a bond rather than a uniform dominant color.

Matter03

A varied subject but never descriptive

The fins use elongated lines, the bushes use shorter keys and the sky use softer passages. Reproduction must retain these differences in gesture.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Hermitage Museum preserves Garden in Bordighera, morning print, oil on canvas from 1884, 65.5 × 81.5 cm, inventory ʻonds-10617 and Wildenstein 866.

Location01

The famous Moreno Garden

Francesco Moreno's estate brought together palm trees, citrus fruits and exotic plants. Monet finds there a plant density that he considers difficult to translate with his usual palette.

Effect02

A morning feeling

The subtitle specifies the desired light state. Fresh blues and warmer pinks are distributed throughout the canvas to suggest still diffused light.

Provenance03

Former Otto Krebs collection

The painting belonged to the German industrialist Otto Krebs. She then joined the Hermitage and was presented to the public with this ensemble from 1995.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version ʻonds-10617, Wildenstein 866
  • The light bell tower visible between the palm fronds
  • The very dense superposition of foliage
  • The morning balance of blues, pinks and greens

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This abundant garden gives rhythm to a living room, a library or a bedroom. A pinkish beige wall, dark wood and gray blue or moss green textiles accompany its light without overloading the space.
