À propos de l’œuvre

Le Jardin de Monet à Giverny, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1895 · Bührle BU 0072 · W1420

Monet's Garden in Giverny, Bührle W1420hand painted reproduction

In the middle of a garden saturated with flowers, Suzanne Hoschedé walks along a pink path. Her red bodice, light skirt and straw hat appear between masses of blue, yellow, orange and green. Monet does not describe each botanical variety: he organizes a colorful immersion where the figure seems to be born from the same touch as the vegetation.

Look at the work

Suzanne Hoschedé crosses the Norman Clos like a presence of color in the middle of flowers

The pink path rises from the lower left and widens around the figure, creating the only truly open area. On either side, the massifs rise very high and close the horizon. The garden becomes an enveloping space, without visible sky or facade to set its limits.

The woman stands out thanks to the red of the garment and the light value of the skirt, but its contours remain crossed by the surrounding touches. The yellow and orange flowers form several clusters, the blues circulate like a cool shadow and the dark greens maintain depth.

In W1420, the garden does not frame the figure: it gently absorbs it into its own light.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Le Clos Normand as a constructed landscape

Based in Giverny since 1883, Monet gradually transformed the old vegetable garden in front of the house into a garden of colors. In 1895, he did not copy nature left to chance: he painted a motif that he himself organized, planted and evolved.

02

An identifiable figure at the heart of the vegetation

Suzanne Hoschedé, daughter of Alice, brings a human scale and discreet movement. Her vertical body responds to the guardians of the right massif, while her arm extends the oblique gesture of the path and the flowers.

03

A transition table to large water gardens

The same year, Monet had the Japanese bridge built in the water garden. This canvas remains centered on the Norman Clos and the figure, but its network of colorful touches already announces the immersion without horizon which will dominate the Water Lilies.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 2051 × 1800 px. Resulting from the collection reproduction associated with the Bührle Foundation, it was converted into a real WebP with its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A clear path caught between two walls of flowers

The composition forms a soft funnel: the path leads towards Suzanne, then disappears behind her. The lateral massifs must remain asymmetrical to maintain the impression of walking and profusion.

Color02

Coral red, floral blue and solar yellow

Warm tones draw the eye towards the figure and flowers, while blues refresh the shadows. The greens, very varied, ensure cohesion without becoming a uniform mass.

Matter03

A fragmented touch that changes scale

The flowers are indicated by short impasto, the foliage by darker gestures and the path by wider passages. Reproduction must maintain these differences in rhythm and load.
