Look at the work

The driveway, sunflowers and house form a vertical garden

The path widens at the bottom of the canvas then narrows to the stairs. Four large blue and white pots line the borders. Sunflowers rise on either side and lead the gaze towards the pink facade.

Shadows cross the path in blue, green and plum. The orange-yellows of the flowers respond to the purple roof and blue sky. Figures, foliage and architecture are defined by juxtaposed colors rather than closed contours.

The perspective promises an entrance into the garden, but the staircase and the high horizon constantly bring the eye back to the dense surface of colors and materials.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A vertical composition with a high horizon

The rising path, the sunflower stems and the house stacked at the top give the canvas its upward momentum.

02

Pots as perspective milestones

Their size decreases towards the steps. These objects that Monet took with him during his moves precisely punctuate the depth.

03

Colorful shadows on the path

Blue, plum and green replace gray. The sun thus becomes a relationship of colors which animates the entire aisle.

Read this specific version

The National Gallery of Art public file has been converted into a real WebP of 2,398 × 3,000 px. This definition preserves the details of flowers, pots and figures.

Composition01

Retain the center axis of the driveway

Its widening towards the foreground should lead naturally to the steps and to the house.

Color02

Preserve sunflowers in high masses

Their yellows and oranges must remain distinct from the green foliage without becoming a repetitive pattern.

Matter03

Keep figures briefly indicated

The child in the center and the group on the steps remain secondary but essential on the scale of the garden.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The National Gallery of Art documents The Artist's Garden at Vétheuil, oil on canvas from 1881, 151.5 × 121 cm, Ailsa Mellon Bruce Collection, inventory 1970.17.45 and Wildenstein 685.

Garden01

The terraces designed by Monet in Vétheuil

The painter obtains from the owner the possibility of planting the sloping land which descends from the house towards the Seine.

Family02

Monet's son in the middle of the aisle

The National Gallery identifies the boy with the cart as one of the painter's young sons; other members of the household stand on the steps.

Registration03

The canvas bears Claude Monet 80

The dated signature appears at the bottom right, while the Wildenstein institution and catalog place the execution of this version in 1881.
