À propos de l’œuvre
Pelouse ensoleillée dans un parc public, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · July 1888 · Arles
Sunny lawn in a public park, F428Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
A freshly mowed lawn descends in wide green bands towards the foreground. A weeping willow closes the right, while oleanders, flowering shrubs and light blue skies bring out the light of the park.
Look at the work
A green slope framed by a willow
Van Gogh takes a low view of the sloping lawn. The long traces of cut grass reach out to the viewer and give the terrain a scale that the little corner of the sky makes even more sensitive.
The dark willow acts as a curtain on the right. Opposite, the pink and red bushes form a luminous border that separates the grass from the sky.
Painted in Arles in July 1888, this 60.5 × 73.5 cm oil on canvas is F428/JH1499. It belongs to the Merzbacher collection and is reported on permanent loan to the Kunsthaus Zürich.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The composition is based on a strong opposition between the clear opening of the lawn and the falling mass of the willow. The keys follow the slope, branches or volume of the bushes instead of being uniform.
Lawn leads directly into the picture
The long yellow and green hatching follows the relief and transforms a simple lawn into a deep and moving space.
The willow concentrates the dark greens
Its drooping foliage forms an almost black silhouette which gives all their intensity to the light areas of the center.
Flowers border horizon
Oleanders and red shrubs appear as a discontinuous frieze, between the green slope and the small triangle of sky.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
In his letter to Theo dated July 5, 1888, Van Gogh described precisely this new subject: a mowed lawn, a weeping tree, round bushes and oleanders. The edition of the letters connects this passage to F428/JH1499.
A subject described by Van Gogh himself
He mentions the long strands of hay drying in the sun and the little corner of blue-green sky, two details clearly visible in the canvas.
A public garden near the Yellow House
The scene belongs to park studies carried out in Arles, in the immediate environment where Van Gogh worked during the summer of 1888.
Merzbacher Collection
The work is kept in this private collection and documented on permanent loan to the Kunsthaus Zürich.
