The Geldersekade sinks between the tall houses of Amsterdam. Boats clutter the canal, almost vertical masts cut through the sky and patches of snow cling to boats, docks and roofs. Monet tightens his palette around cold browns, ochres, grays and greens to make the diffuse light of a winter day.

A narrow canal becomes a dense construction of masts, facades and muffled reflections

The boats in the foreground are seen from above and partially cut by the lower edge. Their dark hulls alternate with snow-covered surfaces. The masts rise like an irregular grid and reduce the houses at the bottom to fragments of facades drowned in the atmosphere.

The right quay forms a clear diagonal which leads towards the center of the canal. On the left, bare trees and buildings merge into the mist; on the right, tall houses retain warmer browns. The dark water takes on these colors without offering a symmetrical reflection.

Snow and mist do not simplify the city: they reveal its density, superpositions and contained light.

Reddish browns, purplish grays, muted greens and small white reserves replace the dazzling blues of Argenteuil. Temperature differences are enough to separate water, snow, wood and masonry.

An Amsterdam observed before the late series

Monet stayed in the Netherlands in 1871 then returned there in 1874. This W300 urban view is distinguished from the more open landscapes of Zaandam by its narrow space and vertical architecture.

The Wildenstein catalog classifies this version under number 300. The base of the Banco de la Republica retains a date around 1870, while several catalogs place it in 1874; the fork preserves this documentary history.

Entered the collection in 2000

The Banco de la Republica registers the work under number AP3261 and indicates its entry into the collection in 2000. It is currently located at the Museo Botero de Bogotá.
