Wheat sheavesReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Eight sheaves erected occupy a field just harvested. In this exceptionally wide panorama, Van Gogh gives each bundle of wheat its own silhouette, then connects the whole with a network of pale blue, ocher and cream touches.

Look at the work

Eight individualized sheaves in the harvest light

The sheaves do not form a regular row. Some lean, others widen at their base or tighten under the link. The larger ones cut almost the entire height of the field, while the following ones slide between them and extend the pattern towards the edges.

Van Gogh models the straw with yellow, beige and brown lines, but reserves a very light gray blue for the shadows. The mown earth is built by short, horizontal touches. A thin succession of green and ocher bands closes the landscape without a real sky.

Each sheaf becomes a character of the harvest: different from its neighbor, but united to the field by the same pictorial material.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The 1985.R.80 canvas can be recognized by its double square format, its eight bundles of wheat and its unusually light range dominated by straw and blue.

01

A double square format

With a width almost exactly twice its height, the canvas forces the eye to circulate laterally. The sheaves thus replace the vanishing point with a rhythmic succession.

02

Pale blue shadows

Blue does not describe the sky: it lands on straw and the ground. This cold contrast brings out the yellows without hardening the volumes.

03

Eight distinct silhouettes

The tilt, opening and connection of each sheaf varies. This individuality is at the heart of the composition and must remain readable in a faithful reproduction.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The Dallas Museum of Art preserves Wheat Sheaves under number 1985.R.80. The work, painted in July 1890, is cataloged F771 and JH2125.

Series

Thirteen paintings in double square format

After receiving new paintings on June 17, 1890, Van Gogh created thirteen compositions in Auvers in this very elongated format. Sheaves of wheat belong to the last of this set.

Subject

From harvest to bundle

The collective field was cut and then collected into distinct units. The museum highlights the individuality of these sheaves, opposed to the uniform extent of the wheat before harvest.

Collection

Wendy and Emery Reves Collection

The work entered the Dallas Museum of Art in 1985 with the collection of Wendy and Emery Reves. It bears the 1985.R.80 inventory.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must maintain the gap between the eight silhouettes, the blue-gray shadows placed on the straw and the variations in thickness which give the field its relief.

  • The number, position and inclination of the eight sheaves
  • The links and blue curves that structure each beam
  • The horizontal touches of light blue and cream of the mowed ground
  • The thin succession of green and ocher bands on the horizon
