From the Sainte-Catherine coast, Rouen appears like a colorful mist crossed by the spiers of the cathedral. Monet places thin bands of yellow, pink, blue and gray on a canvas sometimes left visible. This notation from 1892 is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen.

Look at the work

Rouen reduced to a few signs in pearly light

The city occupies a wide middle strip where houses, roofs and factories merge. In the center, the verticals of the cathedral and Saint-Maclou are enough to identify Rouen. The pale yellow sky and the blue hills envelop these silhouettes.

The touch is light, almost transparent. Monet does not seek the impasto of the Cathedrals: he uses the oil like a watercolor, revealing the grain of the canvas and superimposing very fine chromatic layers.

W1315 is less a topographical view than a note of light: Rouen fits in a few verticals in the middle of the mist.

Stayed in Monet's workshop

The work bears the workshop stamp at the bottom right. Long preserved by the heirs, it was revealed to the public in 1994 then acquired by the Rouen museum in 1995.
