À propos de l’œuvre

L'Entrée du port de Trouville, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · The Trouville channel at low tide · Hungarian National Gallery

Entrance to the port of Trouville W154hand painted reproduction

Two fishermen stand at the edge of the channel while sailboats with red, white and brown sails reach the entrance to the port. The two piers frame the water without symmetry: the high dark wall on the left opposes the long low dike on the right. Monet combines a daily work scene with a very clear study of reflections.

Look at the work

Clear channel opens between two uneven piers

On the left, a high pier descends at an angle and bears a small figure. On the right, a low quay stretches to the horizon. Between them, a green boat with a large pink sail dominates several more distant boats.

The foreground fishermen are seen almost from behind, one standing and the other sitting near a yellow basket. Their lines extend the rods into the calm water, where the sails are reflected in pink, green and gray bands.

The monumentality of the piers and the tiny scale of the fishermen make the narrow passage towards the sea a wide landscape.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Two diagonals framing the aperture

The walls converge towards the horizon but their different height avoids any regular corridor effect.

02

The pink sail as a colorful center

It immediately catches the eye and its vertical reflection connects boat, water and foreground.

03

A largely reserved sky

The upper half, almost white, gives air to the masts and accentuates the low height of the port.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference corresponds to inventory 367.B of the Hungarian National Gallery. The public domain file of 3998 × 3286 px was reduced to 3000 × 2466 px, without enlargement, then encoded in WebP.

Composition01

Individualized sails

Salmon pink, cream, brown and yellow distinguish each boat despite the simplicity of the design.

Color02

Reflections longer than shapes

The colors of the sails descend into the water in vertical touches interrupted by the movements of the channel.

Matter03

A luminous reserve in the sky

The gray-blue passages remain very thin and allow the light background around the masts to breathe.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the two piers of different heights.
  • Keep the pink sail and its reflection without saturating them.
  • Keep fishermen and their rods in the foreground.
  • Preserve the magnitude of the sky and the faint horizon line.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its bright grays, colorful sails and balanced format match a living room or seaside house. A light oak, bluish gray or fine black frame accompanies the piers.
