A small fruit tree stands in a meadow covered in frost, in front of a curtain of bushes and houses bathed in pale light. Monet divides the motif between the cold blue of the ground still in the shade and the orange-browns of the trees touched by the sun. This simple opposition transforms an ordinary garden in Argenteuil into a very precise study of the winter morning.
Look at the work
In the foreground, the frozen grass forms an irregular sheet of blue, cold green and white. An almost bare young tree, slightly shifted to the left, provides the main vertical marker. Its thin branches do not close the view: they allow the eye to circulate towards the bushes and houses.
The middle strip of shrubs is darker on the left and warmer on the right. Beyond, the white facades and light roofs emerge in fragments. Monet chooses neither character nor building as the narrative center; the transition between the shaded part and the sunny part itself becomes the subject.
Light does not uniformly cover the garden: it reveals, zone after zone, the color of the cold.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The tree in the foreground first catches the eye, but it remains frail enough not to dominate. The houses, hedges and strips of land are distributed horizontally and let the luminous impression govern the whole.
The blues of the frosty meadow oppose the ochres, pinks and oranges of the background. This separation does not correspond to two different objects: it makes visible the action of the sun in the same space.
Grasses, branches and foliage are indicated by superimposed lines and touches. The details are not closed by contours; they appear thanks to variations in value between frost, vegetation and facades.

The image reproduces the work MB-Mon-05 from Museum Barberini, identified as Wildenstein 363. The official file of 2,500 × 2,038 px was preserved at its native definition then encoded in WebP, without artificial enlargement.
Its dark trunk and thin branches stand out just enough against the meadow. A silhouette that is too thick would make the tree an isolated subject and reduce the feeling of space.
The soil combines blue gray, muted turquoise, green and almost white flashes. These changes give substance to the frozen grass without transforming the terrain into a uniform surface.
Their cream, pink or bluish walls blend into the sky and the trees. Too clear edges would break the atmospheric continuity sought by Monet.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1875, this oil on canvas measuring 50 × 61 cm is kept at the Museum Barberini under number MB-Mon-05. The Wildenstein catalog raisonné records it under number 363.
The Museum Barberini links the painting to a group of eighteen landscapes created during the winter of 1874 -1875. The scene would be painted in January or February 1875, when Monet directly observed the effects of the cold around his house.
The museum notice compares this view to a painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir executed from a nearby location. The confrontation shows how two painters start from the same place but construct light, space and touch differently.
The institution's profile documents in particular the Brame and Bernheim-Jeune galleries, the Monteux, Koehler, Resch and Schäfer collections, then two Christie's sales before entering the Hasso Plattner Collection.
