À propos de l’œuvre

À travers les arbres, île de la Grande Jatte, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · La Grande Jatte in spring 1878 · Wildenstein 458

Through the trees, Grande Jatte island W458hand painted reproduction

From the northwest shore of Grande Jatte Island, Monet looks towards Courbevoie through a curtain of trees. Dark trunks, blue-green leaves and tangled branches occupy the foreground; between their openings appear clear water and some orange roofs. The landscape is not presented as a panoramic view, but as a filtered vision experience.

Look at the work

A bank seen behind the moving screen of the trees

The large vertical trunks close the left and center of the canvas. Their dark mass acts like a foil: it immediately places the viewer under the foliage and pushes the Seine towards the intermediate plane. The branches do not draw a continuous outline; they cross in small touches where blues, greens, browns and whites respond to each other.

Beyond this plant screen, the light reaches the water and the houses of Courbevoie. The red orange roofs serve as hot spots in a range dominated by cold greens. Monet reduces the architecture to a few signs, because the real subject is the variable distance between what is shown and what the leaves conceal.

The gaze never crosses the trees in a single movement: it advances from opening to opening, from the nearby shadow to the luminous roofs.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

Trees as a foil

Trunks and leafy masses are installed in front of the landscape, not around it. Their proximity gives great depth to a narrow canvas.

02

A network of colored keys

The leaves are separated into blues, greens, yellows, turquoise and browns. These differences prevent the shadow from becoming opaque and reflect the light circulating between the branches.

03

Roofs to measure distance

The small orange surfaces of Courbevoie contrast with the cold foreground. Their scale and reduced sharpness immediately locate the other bank.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The unique reference corresponds to the Wildenstein 458 version sold by Christie's. The best reliable public file available measures 512 × 425 px; it is kept at its native definition, without artificial enlargement or accentuation likely to invent material.

Composition01

An almost obstructed framing

Trees occupy most of the surface and leave only fragments of sky, water and houses. This voluntary obstruction makes the view so original.

Color02

Colds punctuated with orange

Blues and greens build the shadow of the foreground. The orange roofs and a few cream passages draw the eye towards the other bank.

Matter03

A touch adapted to depth

The gestures are firmer on nearby trunks, smaller in the foliage and very condensed on distant buildings.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Christie's notice identifies this painting as number 458 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné and precisely documents his 1878 campaign.

Together01

One of eight views of the Grande Jatte

In the spring of 1878, Monet painted eight landscapes of the island. The stable pattern allows him to study plant screens, views of the Seine and different light conditions.

Viewpoint02

The northwest bank facing Courbevoie

The scene is taken from the quiet part of the island, looking towards Courbevoie. The roofs visible through the trees belong to the other bank.

Context03

A Parisian campaign in 1878

After leaving Argenteuil, Monet rented accommodation on rue d'Édinbourg in Paris in January. On the Grande Jatte he found a still green motif, close to the city but far from his hustle and bustle.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the weight of dark trunks without blocking the nuances of the foliage.
  • Circulate the blues and greens between the branches in separate touches.
  • Keep orange roofs at their small scale and at their right distance.
  • Keep openings clear on water so the foreground remains transparent.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This canvas combines a strong vertical structure with cool undergrowth light. It is suitable for a living room, library or office; a walnut, deep green or matte gold frame accompanies the trunks and lets the orange accents vibrate.
